Tormek problems
I purchased this Tormek grinder many years ago at a timber and woodworking show, from memory at Jeff's Shed to give some idea of how long ago it was. It has had an absolute minimum of use, if I have used it once a year then I would be surprised. After clearing out my late FIL's shed there were 4 chisels that I thought might be put to better use than paint stirrers and opening paint cans which no doubt they were pressed into service for.
The last time I used it I wasn't totally happy with the squareness of the grind but it was pretty close.
This time the 2 larger ones were pretty close although certainly not exact. I had flattened the backs prior to grinding on the 300 grit side of my diamond plate. The 2 smaller ones though were far from satisfactory as I think you can see. The larger of them has a low spot on the back at the right hand side which explains why it drops away. The smallest though is just way out.
I was thinking that maybe the wheel was out of true so got out the truing tool. This ended in disaster and I think has basically ruined the wheel with gouges out of it, the results of which can be seen in the water tray.
What I did notice after, which explains some or all of the chattering that I experienced was that there was noticeable up and down movement of the shaft when gripping the wheel, I don't think that it was in the wheel itself.

One thought I did have whilst writing this is the guide bar adjustment/movement. I find the adjusting 'nut' is far from a smooth adjuster and the bar needs to be tapped up or down for other than micro adjustments which possibly results in being out of true but certainly nothing to do with shaft movement.
Thanks

Old Tormek grinder
Hi,
I have this Tormek 1200 model and I agree, it's quite old and the jig for plane blades and chisels has gone through 2 revisions/changes since this model was sold.
I use mine for putting a 25 degree primary angle on blades but I find that to get the grinds evenly across chisels I have to manually slightly twist or rotate the chisels via pressure on different parts of the jig that slides along the round metal bar. The slowness of the grind means there is plenty of time to view the grind and then take corrective action.
The default action of the jig rarelys result in an even grind on chisels, especially narrow ones and the resulting chisel blade end is often not at right angles to the sides of the blade. If you google you will find lots of Tormek owners complaining about this.New Zealand

Thanks Paul
I did buy a later jig but don't know if it is V2 or V3. Looks like I wasted too much money all those years ago. I might have to investigate better options.
