Tough Drill Press Rebuild.
Good early morning every one,
Since my first post of introducing myself I have been working on my first machine rebuild and would like to share with you.
While back I bought an old tough brand 4 speed drill press for bench use.
I was using as wire wheel for small parts and limited drilling due no quill spring housing.
Even without the quill spring it is surprisingly quiet, reliable, all solid cast Iron and solid steel parts!
Due to complaints from my wife about Um.. Safety issues I decided to stop procrastinating and just dismantling it down to check all its parts.
Belt was tearing, wiring torn.. with no switch for motor, rust, grease, flaking lead paint all makes for unhappy wife haha.
Here are some photos from before I took it apart

I will up load a few more later when I get some sleep of it dismantled down to bits.

It's such a pity the table has ended up like so many where people just don't care or don't care enough.
Did the originals come with a guard over the belt and pulleys?Dallas

Any idea of the vintage?
Coincidentally, machines4u had a Tough brand 3P pedastal drill that looks to be a younger age than yours.

Their pedestal drill does have a a full guard over the belts and pulleys, but my guess is that yours is older and only ever had that half-guard. Dad's workshop in the 1950's had lots of exposed belts and zero guards.

My guess on the age of this is from very late '40's to early fifties. A friend of mine has one similar but it lacks the "wings" on the Tough logo.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Yep it is! Table is a right off and I will look for a replacement later down the track.
The drill press was from out the back off a water tank factory that shut down years ago and it did have hack job made belt guard but I cut up and then got rid off it.
It was made from old rusted out water tank parts and spot welded in odd sections.

Hello Graeme, I have looked online and from the very small amount information I have found it may be from the early to mid to 1950's I have seen two others like it before I bought this one. all had thick grey hammer tone paint. same as mine.
All had 4 speeds on them including the floor model I have seen and none had a belt guard but I could be wrong due to this one on Facebook market place and on Grays.com
Though the older ones with out belt guards seem to have a single large bolt holding the casting of the drill in place at the top of the post while the newer ones seem to have two bolts.
Might be due to weight from parts for more speeds?

Tough Drill
If you are stuck for parts or info I may be able to assist.
I have some tough drill parts in stock including quill spring.
All parts available are unused but after many years there is surface rust.

Tough drill parts
Hello Norm,
Sorry for the late reply I have not had much time go on the forum for a long time
I am looking for the dome shaped cover or spring housing and internal parts of the dome that mine is missing.
Would you happen to have any parts for it? or possible plans I could use to have machined or cast from?
Thank you for asking me.
