Running timber through with visible glue squeeze out on the surface is a no-no (whether set or not). Quickest way to clog and stuff up the papers.

I always set the sanding height to 1-2mm higher than the thickness of the piece going through, set the feed to slow, then run the workpiece through while slowly lowering the drum height. The piece might go through a couple of times without the paper even touching it, but when it does make even the lightest contact you'll hear it. After this, set the feed speed appropriately for the type/width of timber, run the entire piece through at that height setting, then continue dropping the drum by the fabled "poofteenth" per pass as Breezy says above.

We have a Performax twin drum sander 37'' model. These wide sanders play up something chronic when used by inexperienced operators. Resinous timber requires very fine settings. The difference between the front and rear drum should be no more than half a millimeter, even less for high resin content. As said by others, the shallower the depth of cut the better. Feeding the timber in at an angle helps prevent burning, but not always an option on narrower machines. Old thongs (think feet, not undies) make a good cheap abrasive cleaner. Regular use of the thong (after each pass) helps reduce build up and burn marks.
I have been considering fashioning a wide cleaning strip attached to the dust hood with thong material pinched between a pair of small size lengths of angle adjustable by tilt angle against the drum. So far, with careful use of the machine, it hasn't been necessary.
