Thread: WL-14V - Mini Wood Lathe (2 Days Old & Won't Start)

Warranty claim.

I am sure you would have checked, but make sure the spindle is not locked by the pin used for indexing.

I hope you manage!

I checked every possible thing that I could think of...and the lock.
I turned it on this morning and the motor started on high revs but dropped down to 0.

Will it start with the belt removed?

I've tried with the belt on/belt off/tightened it/moved it to another setting. This morning it stayed on for about 10 seconds but the speed was dropping until it reached 0 and then stopped.

Did you buy it from someone local who is a H&F distributor or did you get it directly from H&F? If local, I would be just taking it back under warranty as I don't think it is going to be something you will be able to repair as it sounds like an electronic failure. If you got it direct from H&F they are pretty good from all reports on backup service, so just contact them.
I understand you just want to be able to use your new toy and were hoping it would be an easy fix, but it doesn't sound like it.

I would advise not making any further attempts to start the lathe and to fully isolate it from the power supply. Contact H&F re the issue and formalize a warranty claim.


In general I am concerned about the number of reports of electrical safety issues with imported wood working machinery and the level of QA / QC both at the factory and by importers of these machines. It is very clear that the importer must ensure that they are electrically safe and comply with Australian standards!

I called Hare & Forbes this morning and let them know about the issue.
I'm a member of the local Mens Shed & its run by a guy (David) who is an electrical engineer, so I let them know that he would be checking everything this morning and I'd let them know the situation. David couldn't find anything to explain it so they have sent (via air express as I'm in Tassie) a new circuit board which David will install, and should arrive tomorrow. Hopefully thats the problem and its resolved, but in the meantime I was able to bring home the mini lathe (carbatec) from the shed, so my woodturning can continue and I'm not as frustrated. I'll let you know when the part arrives and if it works.....fingers crossed. They're a good company and I can't complain about their customer service, thats for sure.

That's great news that you have someone with the skills required to help you out. I hope the board arrives quickly and David can get you up and running very soon.
Glad you can borrow the Carbatec lathe so you're not so stressed, but it will be even better when you get your own going.

I'm lucky that this mens shed lets women be members and that David let it happen. I'm the only woman there and we all get along really well, no issues or dramas. Hopefully that part (circuit board) will get here today and that its the solution.

I purchased a mini lathe and had nothing but trouble getting it to go through the variable control to the point where I just got rid of it even though supplier came good with a warranty lathe, same thing gave it to mens shed to attempt to get it to go.I am talking about new lathes that did little or no work.
