Thread: A wobbly grinder and CBN wheel

Hi all, wisdom needed.

Some time back gave me a grinder to fit a new CBN wheel from CWS.

As far as I can tell the CBN is true. I cant guarantee this of course! The wheel uses a 5/8's hole and the diameter of the shaft is also 5/8", or from the micrometer reading just a smidgen smaller.

The wheel when not tightened up has a very small wobble on the shaft. Obviously the shaft has worn over the years and it's not a nice smooth slide-on fit....it's loose.

The question is, is this fixable? Is this something a machine shop could rectify (by say, building and lathing it exact, or lathe and fit a sleeve?) or should I toss the grinder as the cost/repair is uneconomic? (this would be a huge shame as the grinder was a gift and wouldn't feel right.)

Is there some way to bodge up such a very small tolerance gap? (aluminium foil? Some mechanic trick?)

FYI, the CBN cannot be true'd like a regular wheel, so there is no way to dress it, so it must be fixed at the grinder stage.
