Asking the wrong questions
I was reading some stuff that people had posted in this part of the forum about chisel mortisers and seeing as though I intend to buy one after Christmas I was interested in what people had to say. But then it occurred to me that they were giving all the right answers to the wrong questions. They seemed to be answering the question "Do you need a chisel mortiser?" Or "Can mortising be done better some other way?" All very well, true and wise.
But I am not getting a chisel mortiser because I need one. I am not getting one because I have no other means of making mortises. I am getting one because I want to play with the thing. When I was little I suppose I had a rattle, some some blocks and a teddy bear. Now I have various routers, saws, drills etc etc. But the principle of the thing is the same.
Lets not kid ourselves here. Most of us earn our livings somewhere else and by some other means. We go to our sheds to play. The wood, the machinery, the tools are our toys. My shed is my play pen. The fact that useful items like kitchens, cupboards, gifts and decorations sometimes come from out of the shed is only a side benefit. My age is still less than my number of posts

Chook,
You'll love playing with it. Then you realise that it can be improved. You go and do that and play some more.
Wow, furniture came out of all that playing, thats a bonus....

In the days of black and white - just newer than sepia - whenI bought my first router [an old all metal Black and Decker] I bought it to do a specific job - as it had to be ordered it took a while to arrive so I ended up doing the job by hand. When it arrived it sat in the metal box for a period until I needed it for a job that was specific router work. My first impressions were that it would be an expensive "toy" which would be used very infrequently - how wrong I was! My "toy" became such a welcome addition to my "toybox" that it seemed to generate its own projects and made life so much easier - the router now seems to be used in almost every project and has led me to some interesting "inventions" to work with it.
Go for it Chook and enjoy wherever it leads you.

morticer
If you buy it you will use it.
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.
Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

Mugpunter and Rat have it right I think.
You should ask yourself
1. Do I want it
2. Can I afford it
3. What does it do
If the answer to 2 out of 3 of these is yest then you can skip the next question
4. Do I need it.My age is still less than my number of posts
