    I did not insult you
"Subtlety and nuance are not your strong point". " Or is that too complex for you?". "... in simple terms for you". At the very least there is an attempt to make me appear slow on the uptake. Offence is taken not given, I really am not offended but it is a hallmark of some people's style that these little insinuations of lack of intelligence creep in when an opponent doesn't accept your argument.

I'm sorry you felt driven to it. I don't think my comments to you have been condescending. I've merely suggested several times that you are confusing the standard with the act in your comments on specific aspects of this debate, I still believe you have done and if you unravel all of your comments in the context in which they were given, you must agree.

The pimply bottom remark directed to Master Splinter was his own description of himself, I just borrowed it. He knows (I hope) that it is tongue in cheek.

I understand your point that the standard, regulations and the act all form part of the framework of regulation and that the framework as a whole restricts access to licensed persons. I just don't see how it relates to whether or not the standard requiring specific provisions be made for a 15A point have anything to do with licensing legislation. Even around the margins. The standard is freely available. The parts are freely available. Even apprentice electricians can master it. The only thing stopping me from implementing the standard to the letter is the lack of a license.

silentC - please....try to refrain from using 'tongue', 'cheek' and 'bottom' in the same sentence!!!! It doesn't parse well!!!

I'm just off to get the brain bleach, now.

Personally I think that the original posters question has been well answered a long time ago. Where this thread has ended up is seriously off topic, highly pedantic, and some might say, childish and ignorant.

    Play nicely guys.

Not to mention f*$#ing boring. I skipped from page 8 to here to write this.

Get the 15 amp circuit installed. Trust me, it will be less painful than reading this entire thread!!

Well Ladies and Gentleman, as has been said, the original posters question has been well answered and I think it is time for the closing arguments.

This thread will be closed shortly.

    Hmmm.
I say, regardless of all the pro and cons well and truly explained and then argued, if its meant to run on 15 amp then run it on 15 amp. Manufacturers surely dont put it there just to have a laught at us when we go to war with each other on internet forums, do they.
If it was a new machine, and I know the original post wanst about a new machine, but if it was, and you modify the plug, say bye bye to your warranty.
Anyway, single point, single circuit, nothing else running on it, means less pesty overloads of the breaker or blowing of the fuse and ressetting the alarm clock, microwave clock, etc etc etc because you are running it off a normal household point. Doesnt mean you will never trip the circuit, I've done it heaps of times in different locations across the country, on different machines.

This topic always gets people going, without fail.

Last thing, when you go to buy a welder, or other high draw item, be aware it might have 15 amp plug, and budget for it. Ask the guys you are buying from what it has, they will tell you. They will also tell you not to modify anything or do anything that allows it to be run off a 10 amp circuit. There are not many welders on the market with a 10 amp plug, those that are will be quite small in capacity and may not suit. In the case of the majority of machine tools out there, wood or metal, you will probably find that anything under 3hp will have 10 amp plug, anything 3hp and over will most likely have 15 amp plug. The amount of 240v machines out there with more than 3hp motor will be minimal, usually it goes to 415v as far as I know. There are some exceptions though.

    My thoughts on the matter.
