2g cert 7 pipe test
I am currently doing the certificate 7 tig course (Australian certification) it is on 90 mm, 3 1/2 " od pipe with a 6mm, 1/4 wall in 2g and 5g positions. I'm fine with everything until it comes to the capping run, my teacher is telling me it's is belly at the bottom to much, even though I am adding filler at the top of the weld. Could anyone help me with. My problem please? And could you post pictures of comparison welds that would/have past equivalent tests, mostly in 2g position
Pictures are on my iPhone and I'm not sure if you can upload them straight from there so il get back to use with that

What are we looking at here.? Are we not looking at axis horizontal the 5g position showing a vertical weave? Granted its sitting on the work bench in axis vertical but the pattern sure looks-like axis horizontal to me.
2g is axis vertical with stacked stringer beads or has it changed?
The Australian Standard As 1796 is the standard by which your test piece will be assessed. Do you have a copy?
With that its equivalent sitting for a car licence with out reading the road traffic act.You must be 100% sure of what you can and can't do.
In the 90's when I taught the course I ensured my students had that information relative to the assessing of the completed weld -straight from AS1796
We are talking max height ,max width all determined by the AS1796 (latest edition I have seen was 2001) code.
Nobody then could afford a set of weld gauges so we each made a set of height & width gauges out of gauge plate.
If you are having a belly at 6 o'clock would suggest less build up fill pass at that area, maybe a mill or so under the prep edge so that gravity does its thing.Or alternately with the original fill pass,go much quicker on your cap travel speed, but be conscious of excess undercut that can result from that.
Sorry there's no photos but they won't help a great deal .It is down to the correct technique and to make that technique an ingrained habit.
Have a look at a site called weldingflash
They will put you on track far better than I can as they are current.

Hey thankyou,
YOu are looking at a pipe welded in 2g position, axis vertical
It is done walking the cup, I haven't fully read the standards but I'm sure it doesn't specify that you are limited to stringers, I have used that method it works but I want to be able to use all methods all methods. The only thing my teacher said about the standard was that there had to be three tacks no longer than 12mm and no smaller, and feather them out and that's the only time your aloud to use a grinder.

you should be able to use a grinder on your root run and hot pass. just cant touch the capping run. I did my 6G not long ago and the teacher said this was fine. you want to make sure its clean all the way through and flat. Maybe that would help with the "belly" on your weld. But in saying that as long as the cap is above the parent metal(no more than 3ish mm i think) and no undercut on the top side of your weld should qualify

The fact of using a grinder isn't the problem mainly wanted to see comparison pictures of pieces that have passed or would pass.

Use 2 runs on the cap will make it easier and help prevent the sag, you will get from gravity. You can use one pass like you have just makes it a bit harder, but from the pictures it looks good, doesnt seem to be sagging?
Also how amny runs have you got under the cap? if you near fill it up before the cap you can use less filler for the cap and it wont sag as much

There's the root and one filling pass which brings it to about 2.5mm under the bevel. Ohh yer good pointil try that next week nearly completely fill the bevel before capping, I was having a problem of feeding so much wire in, I'm using 2.4 filler, what does everyone else use ?

I used 2.4 filler, when i got mine, try to fill it up till near flush then on your cap you can use little filler and go faster and it seems to get a better appearance more shiny looking than dull.

Just start the arc and run over the otherside for a little bit before you start adding the filler
