Default advice on correct setting of mig

my teacher asked me to help him set up the mig welder at school it's an old transformer type transmig 195 what would be the correct setting there are four dials
    weld time 0-10
    dwell time 0-10
    wire speed 0-10
    volts 0-6

we are welding 3 mm plate

we are welding 3 mm plate
    weld time 0-10 = 0
dwell time 0-10 = 0 - weld time & dwell time switched off- from memory on the 195 audibly "clicks" off
    wire speed 0-10
volts 0-6 - maybe 2 then adjust wire speed to when it crackles like bacon frying in a pan. You can tune it up or down, more or less to get the carcling sound.

This is assuming the mig is running .9mm diameter probably ES 071 set the shielding gas around 14 lpm.

Don't allow your ( wire) stick out to become too long.Keep it 12 -15 off the contact tip.
Check the spool wire surface for rust and peel off a layer if necessary to weld with clean wire. Check the insulator is on the right way - thread to the nozzle end, if its on the other way it blocks the gas delivery holes in the diffuser.
And of course clean the nozzle of any adhered spatter and keep it clean
Keep us posted on the results.

    Me again,
Thinking back, you probably would want to switch off dwell and weld time and tape them over ,or even remove the knobs completely, other wise those students (who always know better than the instructor )will drive you bananas by interfering with them in a vain attempt to make the machine run better
The function of those particular controls is wasted in our school workshops environment.

Before anybody welds have them clean out the nozzle of spatter and set up the contact tip below the shroud end.Have them clean/check the shroud /nozzle every 10 mins.

The nozzle tends to bridge with spatter across from the contact tip and the nozzle turns live and you can arc the side out , making it a throw away job.Unless you want to keep fixing contact tips, and nozzles etc,you need to keep on top of this.

As each student goes to use the machine ,require them to do a practice piece of the joint type required on the same thickness of sheet.Mmake them write down the voltage setting, and the wire feed speed.

You might wish to cut and paste and print the sticky notes and keep a reference copy in your folder.Other blokes contributed to these as well as myself. There's a table for set ups in there that RC contributed which is brilliant which you could give them as notes.
Are these kids doing the MEM05 cert 1 or 2 Engineering Certificate ? I am keen on getting a Industry Technology network together.

Probably want to set it higher than 2 on the volt setting we have a 275 transmig and u set it on usually on 3 or 4 to weld 3mm plate so i reckon you will probably need it on atleast 4 on a 195.
