bright flashes when tig welding
Hi all,
A quick query for the tig guys. Every now and then when I establish the arc there are a series of much brighter flashes than the normal weld arc. This is a real pain as it is impossible to see what you are doing. The flashes continue intermittently along the weld.
Only welding stainless, with clean ground thoriated electrode. Althougth I am grinding on the same wheel we sharpen tools on I am dressing the wheel clean before each welding session.
The stainless I am welding is clean with no apparent contaminants on the surface and I have pretty much polished the piece up before welding.
Any ideas??

Hi,
I sense you may have re-read the instructions for the helmet.
Some of the cheaper AD helmets are not suited for low amperage tig welding.
My el cheapo Techman does the same thing below 30 amps.
The battery can fail after a year or two.Sometimes leaving them in the sun helps on temporary basis.
On the other hand my Speedglaas variable has no trouble.
