Default Where to buy plate steel in north west sydney?

    Hi everyone,

I have a workbench with a pine top and I was think of getting a piece of plate steel maybe 10mm thick to throw on top for welding. Anyone know where I could get a piece around 700mm x 900mm and any idea on price?

I am thinking this way as I would't not have to get a second steel bench. I think welding on the ground would a bit annoying after a while and don't know if its any good for the concrete.

I am in North West Sydney (Rouse Hill) if anyone can help.

    Regards,

    Rohin

I reckon Ally makes a better top for a welding bench. It doesn't rust and there's not much that will stick to it so stays a lot cleaner than a steel top. The one advantage of a steel top is you can weld support brackets direct onto the table if you need to but there's not much that can't be supported given sufficent clamps and bits of steel.

Also don't bank on not starting a fire by just covering the wooden top with metal. It would be safer to either replace the wooden top completely or place an airgap between the wooden and the metal tops.

    Hi Rohin ,

I normally get it from Metaland they have a Penrith store. You can get pretty much anything you need and they cut to length.

    Cheers

Sorry I'm not in sydney. Tube pieces are a good idea - maybe weld them onto the sheet as little feet and add some countersunk screws?
