Hi Daniel,
The following ( below) is a cut and paste from the Kangan (Victoria) website.
How current it is I don,t know but it should go part of the way to answering some of your questions.
What I would add that a purchase of the AS 1796 is a real good idea. AS 1796 is the code that governs all aspects of welder certification. If you don't understand and follow the code you are likely to fail the test, even after the training.I taught these courses twice a year for 10 years and saw basically good welders fail time and gain as they did not understand the code,as the requirements are very stringent.
The code itself is expensive to buy at around $180 but can be used for all of the certs 1-10 .
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is each welding module?
The usual cost for a 40-hour welding module is $50.00 plus a $25 student administration fee. Students will also be required to purchase a student workbook. See welding textbook list for prices.
I am unemployed. Can I undertake welding training?
Yes, subject to Centrelink approval. You may even qualify for subsidised training.
When are classes held?
Day and evening classes are conducted throughout the year. Weekend classes may also be available, subject to sufficient numbers.
What are the class times?
Day classes are held from 8.30am to 5pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and night classes are held from 5.30pm to 8.30pm Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs.
What do I have to bring to class?
Full cotton overalls (long-sleeved), safety shoes or boots and a workbook.
Do I have to enrol in an entire module stream or can I just enrol in one module?
You can enrol for as few or as many modules as you wish. You can choose the modules which suit your particular needs.
Will I receive a certificate when I complete my module?
You will receive a statement of results at the end of each year for each of the modules you have completed. You will receive a certificate from Kangan Institute if you complete all of the modules in stage one.
If you wish to obtain a Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA) welding certificate, you must complete a full module stream and you must comply with WTIA certification requirements.

WTIA Welding Certification Requirements
To sit for the Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA) welding certificate, you must have one of the following:
A completed apprenticeship in a recognised trade and at least one years' experience in this welding process during that time.
Two years' welding experience and written evidence of the successful completion of one or more welding courses conducted by an accredited training provider. This training must include at least 300 hours of approved training in this welding process.
Three years' welding experience and during or subsequent to this, 40 hours' approved training in this process.
Other qualifications or experience considered to be appropriate by the Examining Authority to be equivalent to the above.
WTIA welding certification will allow the welder to meet the requirements of statutory authorities and industry demands for a prescribed degree of quality assurance. It is carried out in accordance with Australian Standard 1796 which is related to the welding of boilers and pressure vessels. This is also applicable to a wide range of welding applications.
(Its me again )
Remember this a licence to weld,so its your liability at stake. They may be those that reply and say.hey I passed without buying a Code. That may be so, but as an example you can't drive legally without licence and test etc. and how many pass without reading the road rules.
The cost to you is basically a one off and the Code applies to all 10 certificates and should be a tax deduction.Welders think little of buying a $500 helmet to help them weld better but a re tight to to buy the code which will increase their chances of passing many fold .
Cheers
Grahame

If you are a gun welder and can already weld pipes up perfectly it would be 2 days one day you would do the theory test and another day the practical test, if not most people go to tafe for 2 terms at nights practicing as it is a fairly hard thing to do if you haven't done much of that type of work before as you have tolerances you have to weld to and no defects are allowed really.
