I don't do a lot of welding fab., so don't have a lot of clamps. Just an old vice on a pedestal, and some old vice grips. Today I needed to butt some small plates onto a strap. So I raided my woodworking clamps:

for one of the dual feet clamps, which were purchased from McJing a year or so ago. Take the plastic/rubber boots off, and they are great for clamping either side of a weld:

I clamped onto a sheet of Zelemite, with a thin metal strip (tiny cheap metal ruler), under the thinner piece to level them. Turned out OK:
