    Default CIG Transmig 130 Twin

Hi guys. I've just acquired a cig transmig 130 twin mig, without the gas bottle. The original owner has a large argon bottle but handed it in due the cost of the rental. I have little experience with mig, most of my welding has ben done with my old AEM stick welder..its now about 45 years old but still going. Weighs in at about 40kg! All handyman stuff including car repair. My question re the transmig is, can I use any reel of gasless wire (assuming correct guage and wire type for material). And, do I have to make any changes to the welder to accommodate gasless instead og gas? Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid, my inexperience must be obvious.
    Thanks for any help, Cliff

    Hi Cliff,

If the polarity of the mig can be reversed ,yes it is possible to run flux core gasless wire.

It rather limits the versatility of the machine in my opinion, as flux core by its nature is much hotter.
It is better suited for flat only position although wire is available in industry for some out of position work,ie not flat.
If that translates to these little machines ,I do not know.

If you are willing to throw a bit of money at it you can get regulators and hose relatively cheaply to allow you to use the unit with rental bottles. The economics are up to you to analyse, the wire is cheaper with gas, but you pay for gas and cylinder rental as well. If you were going to run an hour a year or similar, the rental would be uneconomical, but for a machine getting fairly regular use it would get a lot better.

Machine will be more versatile with gas, and the weld quality normally improves and spatter reduces. There are disposable bottles available for casual use, but they don't last long.

many thanks for your tips guys and apologies for late response--I've been visiting my 94yo mum in Coffs. I will only use the machine infrequently so gas bottle rental is not economical. I already rent an oxygen bottle for portagas/oxy and that's streching economics!! Grahame, how do I go about reversing polarity. I assume that would be an internal change? The machine is supposed to be gas/gassless.

I think my CIG is a Transmig 130

anyway, I run CIG Gasless wire 0.9mm.
I have found have CIG Gasless rolls for $15 at Hare and Forbs Machinery - http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/
and Bunning/Supercheap cost towards $25 for the same stuff.

My Transmig has pictures on the cover saying which leads to connect for Gas Bottle or No Gas Bottle.
You can change the leads polarity but switching the leads around, just push in and twist - not hard to undo or change at all.

It's a bit late but hope this helps others.

many thanks Gigitt. I'll have a look at my welder when (or if) it stops raining in Sydney.
