Default CIG Transmig 175i user feedback please

Hi Guys, I currently have an SIP 225 mig & a old 3phase compac stick welder that I use for hobby work. The SIP machine is ok but is about 10years old now and showing its age. I am in the market for a new light weight MIG that I can carry in my rv whilst travelling and use at home for hobby work building trailers & repairing vehicle bodywork etc.I have seen the CIG Transmig 175i and did some searches on this site & the inet to see what users of this machine thought of it. So far I have not found much useful comment. Is there anyone out there who has used this machine or has a professional opinion on its performance compared to equivalent machines. I am not concerned about the 5kg reel capacity. I have never used a TIG but would like to have a go so would be getting the TIG torch option at an extra $130. Is the TIG option any good on this machine? I have seen the 175i in the flesh and it appears to be well made with a quality wire feed motor compared to my SIP machine. Does the 175I have any competition out there around the same rice ( $1029)

    Hello mate,

I own one of the welders and I find it pretty good to use. My current project is a prolite buggy.

I have only used the mig function (not keen on getting another bottle of gas for the TIG, rental is too expensive). Using 0.9 wire, it will easily put out a 6mm fillet, and I have not exceeded the duty cycle yet. Looking at what you want to use it for, I would say it was ideal.

There is also a couple floating around at work that are used in a industrial trade application. I wouldn't say they get an easy life, and as far as I'm aware they haven't had any problems yet. There is also a similar sized kempi, and the boilermakers prefer it, however I believe it is double the price.

Keep in mind that the tig function is DC, scratch start. This means you will only be able to weld carbon and stainless steels. AC HF is required for aluminium.

Unless you doing high quality welds, or very thin sections, I wouldn't worry to much about the TIG function, although it nice to know that it is there if you ever need it.

    Cheers.

Thanks Iggsy. It seems you are giving it a good work out, looks like a lot of welds on the buggy. Yeah, I think If I need to weld Ally it would be min 2mm and I can use the MIG function

Just for info - welding 2mm aluminium with a mig is not quite as easy as it may sound. Possible in the right circumstances, but not in all, and the 175i is DC tig only, so do not rely on the tig function for Aluminium.

Hi, I am also in the market for a MIG and have been looking at what is available. The Tokentools MIG200 @ $899 including TIG torch appears to be a contendor to the 175i. However, the base package does not include a gas reg that Tokentools sells for $84. The MIG200 appears to get good reviews here and people speak well of their after sales service. I'm still tossing up between the 175i and the TT MIG200.

P.S. the Magnum 200 is also worth considering @ $1090 plus $70 for the reg.

Xmas came early for me and I decided to buy the 175i

I got a good deal from M&G Industrial here in Canberra. For a $1,050 I got the CIG Transmig 175i Pro, a 3 mtr TIG torch and a pair of long welding gloves. The package includes an argon regulator, arc leads and 3 rollers (including knurled rollers should you want to use gasless wire).

This is the first time I've used a MIG but I've a fair bit of experience with arc welding and TIG. I have only played with the MIG (with gas) for an hour or so but have found it incredibly easy to use. The controls are very straight forward and after about 1/2 hour and fine some adjustments to the controls, I was begining to lay down some reasonable fillets welding 90 deg and butt joints on 1.6mm mild steel.

I'm using Air Liquide ARCAL 14 gas (Ar, CO2, O2 mix) in a E cylinder and the rental was $175 p.a. and the fill was $76. M&G are the agents for Air Liquide and I'm told that next year Air Liquide will be offering a buy the bottle option and I will then look at buying a D or E bottle and get some 100% argon to use for TIG welding.

I am away this weekend but I will give it a real work out next week on some different thickness materials and let you know what I think of it.

Thanks guys. Xmas came early for me to, I bit the bullet and took advanatage of the Xmas prices on the 175I. Just have to wait until I get home to Qld now to try it out. I was surprised to see it needed a 9kva power plant to run. I was hoping I could run on a 4kva in an emergency but looks like thats out.

I finally had a chance to fire mine up and use it. Yes, it is a pleasure to use, mig function that is, I have not had a chance to use as stick or tig yet. I love the burn back function as my last mig did not have that. All the parts seem to be good quality, gauge, torch, clamp, wire feed mechanism etc

I have no problems with mine either.

Look at https://www.woodworkforums.com/f184/i...-build-149469/ to see some of the things I welded with it.

Mine is great to use and well made. I've only used the MIG function and have been welding steel from 1mm up to some very thick plate using several passes.
