As an aside but on a related matter,

What happens in say a deceased estate when you find a D size oxy set in the shed - Air Liquide or BOC?
What do you do with it?
Would the executor potentially be up for a return fee or outstanding rental?

This situation came up for me in the distant past with an Air Liquide D size set my father had. We sold it to a tradie, which solved my immediate problems

Interesting. When I click on your Bunnings link I get sent directly to the Cairns store, and a comment that no search results were found. When I was in the store recently I asked when this service would be available. None of the staff had even heard of it, though one, an ex boilermaker, was very interested and said he would make enquiries. Looks like I will be paying rent for a while yet. I'm jealous!

This is a copy of a post I made on 7/4/15 on another thread in the Welding forum. It seems nothing has changed since then. I was in Townsville last week and called into Total Tools there. They now have available the Argon & Argon mix cylinders available for buy and swap in D and E sizes. Also available to buy are Oxygen cylinders in E size only.

" Bunnings oxyacetylene non supply in North Queensland"[/h]
"Last week I enquired to Bunnings about possible supply of oxygen & acetylene swap & go cylinders in my region. I received an email from the Airlie Beach (really Cannonvale) Bunnings which is the store nearest to me.

I received the following reply from the Builders/ Trade Coordinartor :

"Just a follow up to the email I replied with on Monday. I have checked with the stores in Townsville and Mackay and to what I thought they do not have the welding gas swap either. It is currently only available in selected stores in Brisbane as a trial. Unfortunately it won’t be available in Nth Qld any time soon."

No real surprise, used to this kind of service around here."

Picked up a pair of bottles at Bunnings in Cannington. I was obviously the first to get them from there as it took them a while for them to find the key to the cages and to work out how to undo the shiny new ratchet straps. Now I can finally get to work on patching my rusty old LandCruiser.

It pays to do your sums here as gas cost per cubic metre vary greatly. Total tools cylinder deposits are not redeemable as far as I know.

I was told by our local TT store that they will never have Acetylene as Bunnings and BOC are the only ones who have direct access to production of Acetylene in Oz.

This will be a thread to watch, especially if Bunnings start doing argon for TIG.

An Oxy set has been on my list of handy to haves for some time. Just haven't had a genuine NEED for it. but if I can grab a bottle from Bunnings, it might come in handy some times

    Thanks for the update Grahame.

I don't think there's a supplier in Rockhampton yet so as soon as my BOC cylinder agreement expires I'll probably source one from Mackay.

I got a credit today for some cylinders I returned to BOC last month and it gave me a small amount of satisfaction to finally be rid of their bottles, hopefully for good. I had to ring up and arrange for them to credit my bank account as all they do is credit your account and they keep the money. I first hired cylinders in 1971 and hate to think how many thousands I have given them over the years.

Unless the fills drop a lot, or a light user, still a way to go!

After giving the last supplier the A, a 10m³ G, best price I have at present is $50 and 13/month. Acetylene is the expensive one now.

If that is true, where does Coregas get their acetylene?

Coregas belongs to Wesfarmers who own Bunnings, so Bunnings are selling Coregas gas. One big happy family. Maybe we will be going from one monopoly to another. At least it will be cheaper in the meantime.

Don't let something as insignificant as a reason keep you from getting one.

Corgas built an Acetylene plant in Yenorra about 10 years ago,So they have there own supply ,
Ive said it here before if you are in Sydney low volume users should be able to get G size oxy for about $40.00 Gsize mig gas for about $50 .00 Argon is slightly more expensive around $80 -$90 dollars for a g size ,Very slightly less for the smaller bottles (rent is still a killer but if you are using 3 or 4 bottles a year you might still be better of renting)
You shouldn't be using Acetylene anyway ,Get decent Harris kit set up for LPG you can then use a 9kg bbq cylinder no rent refil for about $25 it will have the same punch as a g acetylene and despite what you were told you can cut heat and braze as good as if not better than acetylene ,There is no down side in switching to lpg
