Working with hollow section steel pipe
FYI
An issue came up on another forum I visit. As an aside, someone mentioned they do not seal hollow section structures. A debate ensued. To seal or not to seal, that was the question. Reasonable points were made as to why they should be left open or closed.
To prevent water build-up, obviously.
To keep water out, obviously.
I’ve always welded a plate on the ends. For aesthetics as well as preventing corrosion. But should I, should I not? Was it the right thing to do, or am I misguided? I was subsequently pointed in the direction of a report which looked into the issue. The overwhelming conclusion was that sealing the ends prevents corrosion.
Old structures that were being demolished or being replaced due to some misadventure, some of which were more than 50 years old, were examined by cutting them open and having a look at the inside surfaces. The inside surfaces generally appeared as good as new.
