Default MIG disposable gas bottle connection

    Hi,

The jolly man in a red suit brought me a Lincoln Power MIG 180c.
At the moment I dont have any gas, but I have two disposable Argon/CO2 bottles. Now, without spending $80 on a disposable bottle regulator, can I use a adaptor to connect the disposable bottle to the regulator that came with the MIG (obvioulsy meant for re-fillable bottles)?
If I can, what type of adaptor and where can I get one?
I dont really want to spend money on the disposable regulator as I will be looking at a rental bottle next year.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mick ,

There is no adapter. I would suggest getting an account with a gas supplier and hiring a bottle. The small ones will only last you 10 mins each so best to go for an E size.

Yes that is my intent, but I want to use up the disposable bottles first, without having to spend extra on another regulator.

A mate of mine wasted 60.00 on getting hosepower to make him up a semi usable adaptor then he went and spent a fortune on throw away bottles. So hose power may help you out but you need to take your reg and a disposable bottle and they may silver solder something up for you.

Do youself a favour, spend the 14.00 a month on bottle rental and get a e size and you will end up a ton better off. They will all be open on tuesday.

Did you get the spool gun with your lincoln or will you get one?

I wanted to use the bottles that I have without spending more..
I agree that the bottle rental is the way to go, seems a waste to chuck out two full disposable bottles though.

I didn't get the spool gun, correct me if i'm wrong but they are best for aluminium? I am pretty new to welding, so I am just sticking with mild steel and basic joins at the moment, learning the machine and getting a feel for it.

I welded up my MIG trolley, like all good welding newbies, pretty happy with it. A few dodgy welds, mostly due to wrong settings or the wire not feeding properly a.k.a. operator error!

Ahh sorry I didnt realise you got cans with it. Thats got to be some trick give you a free can to get you to buy.. anyway. Maybe you can get cash from the weld shop for them?

Or they might rent or loan you a reg. My local weld shop just did that to help me out when they thought my regularot was dodgy...

After only welding together frames for an extension on my house, so not much mig knowledge at all, I am building a boat from ali. Other than operator error my welds are pretty good no not good looking, but strong.... its not that bad really. Just need to get some technique before I do the stuff that people see all the time... grinder is my friend at the minute.

Spool gun is good for it but no necessry really

    Regards

    Chris

Sell the bottles on eBay/Gumtree or your local trader. Get some money out of it, and let someone who has the setup make use of them.

    Win win
