Minimise/prevent warping
I need to weld a 45mm long bracket onto a length of 27mm diam bar as shown in the rough sketch, I only have a old fashion style stick welder, the weld needs to be neat and tidy, the bar is 1020 mild steel and the bracket is an unknown grade of mild steel, I'm reasonably confident with the stick welder that I can get it neat and tidy but my biggest concern is warpage, the bar has been machined from 32mm diam stock and I don't want it to warp of bend at all, I plan on doing diagonally opposite short runs of up to 6 or 8mm long and cooling down the bar by applying a wet towel to the weld area between each run, I don't need to weld along the whole length of the bracket a short weld at each of the 4 corners and as well as a short run in the middle will be ok - does anyone have any suggestions or tips on how to prevent warpage.
