    Default Plasma Cutter input current

G'day Guys, looking at 40-50A plasma cutters from usual online sources it seems they draw almost 30A input current off a 240V source. This seems to be way over spec for even a 15A supply so I'm wondering if I've got it a little wrong? Any thoughts, suggestions or

    Thanks
    Pete

Yep it appears you're right. I just jumped on ebay and found this one (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-IN-BOX-PL...QQcmdZViewItem) it appears to have a 15amp plug fitted, but is rated at 28amp input current.

I'm not sure what the answer is. I have seen 20amp single phase outlets and I think you can get 30amp???, but still, this thing is fitted with a 15 amp plug.

Yeah that's one I've seen. I run a TIG off a 10A circuit by not running it at full rated power, not ideal but it's only me who uses it so I know not to push it. But the Plasmas seem to have so much higher power requirements I can't see any way it's remotely kosher on even a 15A outlet!

probably hard wired into the plug socket, with 250amp migs we have done this to get more power out of them, after all your household power circuits can supply up to 40amps provided that nothing else is running before it trips the circuit

I wouldn't bet on that Sean. Most domestic power circuits have a 20 amp breaker on them. It would trip well before you hit 40 amps. You could, of course, get a special circuit put in that could supply 40 amps, but to find one in a domestic situation is rare.
    Cheers.

my house must be out of the norm then as i just went and checked and it has 40a breakers, hopefully the wiring is up to it then, not that i have much on any circuit then would draw that much, i assumed my house was pretty standard??
