Default Sheilding Gas - Where to get it.

I am after some shielding gas for my mig welder, and don't want to pay high prices from BOC. Are there any other companies that you can hire / buy gas from. I would prefer argon/co2 mix, however I will use CO2 if its cheaper and easier to get.

I am also considering the option of buying a 6kg Co2 bottle, and getting it filled somewhere.

Any suggestion of where to get either types of Gas would be appreciated, whether it is just fill or to hire - particularly in the Ballarat region. Prices would be helpful too.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you want just CO2 go see a brew shop (or ebay for the initial purchase)

Check the recent threads - there's a comparison of welding CO2 mix vs. beergas. Here 'tis.

Thanks for the comparison, very useful.
When getting CO2 from a home brew shop do you have to buy the cylinder first and then you can exchange them, or can you just pay for the gas, and swap it when it's empty?

    Thanks

    Hi,
I used to use a CO2 fire extinguisher back in UK. BOC bottle hire was way too pricey for me. The local fire extinguisher mob would fill it for a few quid and away l went for 6mth.

Three or four years ago (now in Aus) l posted the same question as you and got nowhere. I took the plunge and went BOC Argoshield Light. Wow, what a difference.
My welds improved and it was easier to lay a bead. Now l wouldn't go back.

You may be a very experienced welder, so not trying to teach or offend. Just my experience as a newbie MIG user about 10yr ago.
    Cheers

Matt has recommended me to COREGAS also and I'm currently corresponding to them via email and prices seem very fair they can also deliver to you if needed at a cost of course but all pricing is reasonable.. defiantly worth contacting them

    Hi,

I did a bit of shopping around a few months back, and found that although Supa Gas provided a price, when I spoke with Mel - Adelaide, she provided a deal price that was much improved.

The rental costs are where we hobby welders get caught, and it seems the rental prices do not vary that much. But the fill prices certainly do.

I was shopping for ArgoShield Light (or similar) for a E cyl. (CoreGas does an E2 here - which is slightly different. Makes comparisons harder)

    Hi
The cost of rental is a killer when you are only using a small amount of gas.
I found a mob that sell you the bottle and the gas then you just go back when you are empty and swap for a full one.The bottle cost a bit somthing like 18 month rentel cost for memory. I am still on the first bottle and it been 2 years now so I am in front
Just can not remember there name just do a Google I also remember that there deliver as well
if the brain cell (yes singular) come back on line I will post there name
