    Cool Made a bearing splitter.

Got bored today and made a bearing spilitter for the press on my lathe. Dished it out of 1" thick plate. Then cut it in half with my 4x6 saw...Bob

Nice work. What thickness did you leave in the bottom? This is something I have wanted to make but I want to leave it until I have a need so I have some idea of what size to make. I may need to make a few eventually. One that fits a car axle bearing will have too big a hole for smaller bearings. I always try to press bearings on the centre race.

The press I made (sorry no pix as it is down in NSW) used 100mm channel for the uprights and 150mm channel for the table and top beam. The pins were 25mm high carbon steel; The same material as used in coil springs. I bought it from a spring manufacturer.

The uprights don't have to be channel. Flat bar would suffice as in use they will be in tension. I used cannel because that is what I had. I have a 20T jack on it. Eight tension springs from a trampoline retract the jack. It works well enough but is nowhere near as smart as those depicted in this thread .

    Nice work Bob.

I've always wanted to build myself one of these as I have a spare bottle jack lying around, but my sticking point has been sourcing the springs... I'd never even given bonnet springs a second thought?

However, Pauls suggestion of trampoline springs might do for the Mark-I, and then if that's successful, I'll look at Mark-II with a bigger jack and bonnet springs.
Too many projects, so little time, even less money!

Once I had built mine I tried to find springs to fit without success. Not enough room. I tried using a pair of old gas struts off a car bonnet or tailgate and they are still doing their job. Neat and simple. They sit in the gap between the two bits of angle used for the uprights.

Cool Shop press tire bead breaker attachment

My mower had a flat and i wanted to dismount the tire to add an inner tube and i couldn't break the bead. So i dreamed up this little attachment for my shop press. It just slips on my 1" straight bar tooling. Worked great...Bob

    Well done Bob.

The second thing is that I thought no further posting was possible after three months and here you are adding a post after almost six months. Perhaps I have got my figures wrong or I am totally wrong and there is no cut off date.

Anyhow, glad to see you are still adding to the press. How did you ever manage without it ?

Good idea Bob. I use my petrol powered hydraulic wood splitter to break beads. Very quick and easy. I need to make a device something like yours to make it even easier.
