They don't seem to have outlets anywhere other than NSW though? I wonder whether Supagas/Boc etc would fill a bottle that isn't theirs? I seem to remember seeing some sort of instructions (didn't take that much notice, thinking I'd never own one anyway) to staff about procedures for customer owned cylinders last week when I swapped my argon over at Supagas, so maybe they will... Or maybe that was just for BBQ gas cylinders....

J&H, no need to apologise, if I don't get much use out of the 1.6 rods, I'm confident I'll be able to find other uses for them

MS, you on the other hand should apologise, teasing this poor WA man with the tantalising ability to own your own gas cylinder, but only if you live in NSW.

From what I understand, the mobs that only do rentals refuse to touch customer owned bottles.

BOC will not touch any other cylinder then theirs ..... and unfortunately you can never actually own a BOC cylinder (I used to work for them) ..... I have just emailed about speed gas and if they have agents and pricing I am in Wagga.

The dust won't do damage in small doses type sprinkle on a sandwich but one should probably not eat it in spoonfuls...[Disclaimer - that was a joke so don't do it]

Seriously, the electrodes you are probably referring to are the Thoriated variety (they are not made of plutonium or some other nasty material.) and even then, it would take many years of grinding everyday to cause damage.
[Disclaimer - At least that is what I have been taught.]
If one is concerned, wear a mask or get a dedicated tungsten grinder:

I use this stuff and it will provide a sharper and more concentric point than hand grinding. It will last a long time as well.

It has gone up a bit in price, but obviously a long way cheaper than its alternatives. I think I got mine from Bobthewelder.
