    Hey Mick Good question

Thats just the setup i was using for the weld in the Pic I took. As a rough guide (an old timer taught me) you add 3 to your cup size to give you an idea of what gas to run.

This makes it around 9 for gas which is generally what i have been using. However when i bump her up to 12 I appear to be generally getting a better weld appearance. (So yeah notice a cleaner better quality weld) Will do a few tests over the Weekend (It may all just be in my head )

As stated earlier Im already running a GAS LENS....................which I use to increase stickout rather than save gas!..............(DOnt get me wrong though saving gas is good too)

    Regards Lou

    HEy Mick

The laywire technique has its place but its important to remember that it can be prone to cold LAP...............Welding pipe is where it shines!

My approach is to learn both dipping rod & the laywire technique both are great skills n both i'll give you great results when used in the right application......................

What ive worked out so far is good prep, setup, technique and rhythm all contribute to learning how to make a good weld FAST!

C'mon Lou... I'm getting sick of the 15amp welder thread... here's a video of a guy using a hot wire setup. Looks pretty relaxing! So what's the difference between hotwire TIG and MIG?? Cheers - Mick

Yeah I agree, been checking that and Brazil Welds reasonably regularly. I've been searching for Lou's Welding Tips & Tricks - couldn't find anything (yet). Cheers - Mick.

One from Brazil Welds... walking the cup on stainless tube. Shows effects of backpurge and results of pickling. Also gives a little tip on stitching weld joins together.

One of the things I worked out is how to get a root pass in and how to create a different bead profile on the peno, when i set up my pipe I used a knife edge and gapped it around 2mm and used 2.4mm filler wire. To have more of a bead inside the pipe all you have to do is push the filler harder into the puddle and if you want a flat bead just wash over the wire. If you want to know more or if you have a go yourself just ask.
