Here's another pipe welding video - you need to do a bit of fast forwarding to make it watchable (skip to 4th minute for starters), but it does show some good arc footage of TIG root and 2nd pass. Cheers - Mick

    Hi Guys
You don't see the filler wire tools around locally any more. Like you I would have another in a minute if I could get it .

Luke, while concavity and suckback problems hasn't been mentioned as yet, I know at some stage they will come up, so here goes.

A way to avoid suckback in the root bead is the place the the filler wire basically at 90 degrees to the torch .

This allows the filler to "bulge" the molten pool slightly as you feed it in from the leading edge of the pool, to the extent of overcoming the normal tendency of the molten pool to shrink rapidly on cooling and overcoming the dreaded root bead concavity.

The technique while not easy to master, provides that slight flat to convex root bead profile that is a winner at the assessment of the test.

I find the harder you push the filler into the pool it will change it on the inside of the pipe, so if you push harder you get more reinforcement on the inside of the pipe.

I'm doing 5G on the 80mm pressure pipe and apart from anything else, it's testing my sanity.

Thanks Mr Fella, I'm aiming at that. I've done 4 of these so far and my best effort was the result of sitting and looking at the material for about 15 mins to visualize everything before I picked up the torch and maybe I need to do something like that each time I attempt it. I have all the gear at home but not quite enough time to practise.

Is this what you meant Grahame? Welding Supplies - TIG Wire Feeder - WeldMart Australia or http://www.machines4u.com.au/view/advert/TIG-PEN/16761/

    Pretty pricey though.

    Cheers

    Hi Mick,
No its similar but not the same.

Mine was a spring loaded tube within another tube that had a angled hole through both tubes.
The wire was inserted through the handle and the spring action on one tube trapped the filler wire.
I could hold it all day as it had a insulated handle and weld down to say 25mm of filler wire.
I have had only seen the couple we had at work.It was light weight and positioned the wire without overly distorting the natural angle of the hand.

The other doover with guide wheel does not look comfy at all.

Default Its time to go for it

    Gidday

Its around three to four months after ive been signed of as a Tradesman as a mature aged apprentice and its Time to start going for my pressure tickets. So last week I called my Local TAFE and organised some seat time behind the lens.

Ive decided to do my 2G and 5G first as a warm up for sitting the 6G. At this stage Im no gun and have done a little bit of stainless and ali in the Fabshop. As a matter of fact Im as green as a cucumber and definitely need to get my HAnd in.

Im pretty thick skinned so have decided to post pictures of my very first welds right from the start (So feel free to bag or praise the welding as required.) Constructive criticism and feedback warmly welcomed! These will totally illustrate my lack of skill but hopefully the big leaps n bounds as I improve and progress.........................................

For anyone young or old considering changing careers or going for high level qualifications dont listen to the knockers baggers doubters and generally negative souls that for whatever reason hate seeing people succeed.

When I was organising things I had one teacher aliken pressure welding to Brain surgery and pretty much write off any chance of me succeeding..................Lets just see what happens

Oh and for anyone whos already passed any of this stuff E-mail me the code will Ya n Jump in with any tips tricks or advise!

    LET THE VOYAGE BEGIN!.........................

    Regards Lou

Check out a lot of the Big jobs on Seek etc etc they all say must be able to do a 6G to get a start!

Im still getting a lot of Misinformation at this stage so once Ive got it all clarified I'll do a post.............

Yeah, they may make you do a 6g weld test to get a job but you wont have to do one to get your pressure ticket

    Hey

Yup thats right ! but the 6G is a harder weld and actually pre qualifies you in all other welds including the 2G and 5G (except restricted) ................ Im still scratching my head and wondering why its not offered as an option. I think (but dont quote me) that you can get procedure qualified after successfully welding out the 6G...............which is what i'll be also doing

Regardless at this stage im not that interested in all the usual hoooooo harrrrrrr about the paperwork and tickets. I just wanna learn how to knock em out n pass Xray etc etc etc .............thats the bottom line.............. Keep the boss happy kids fead n get passed the fat check rather than puttin up with Fabshop moans n groans n wonderin why the bank balance aint goin up! LOL
