Thread: TIG hourly rate of pay

Hi,

I have never done an out & out TIG welding job but I would say the more specialised you get the more money you could expect. However, there are not that many companies that have advertised recently here in Melbourne. Those that have are offering $25ph or less. Of course if you were to sub-contract then you would get more but then in this economic climate it will be pretty cut throat. I know if you was to get a CASA certification, then you can start talking about big money.

Pay rates you will find are not set outright by the process that the welding is completed with.

It will be more likely by how how much the employer is likely to pay for experienced people . A Tig certificate is but one of a couple of post trade certs a young feller should aim to have on top of having a trade cert.

I would be researching this among employers as holding a top line cert requires a bit more than the college training and a test.There are some pre requisites.

Paulo who contributes to this welding forum ,has recently passed his certification and would be the ideal bloke to get the good oil from.

On the notion of a Casa cert I suspect there is a good few years between training for a Tafe cert and readiness for a Casa cert. If you think the Tafe based AS1796 is not easy,it would be a picnic compared to what Casa will want from an applicant.
I would tend to think from what I have picked up its more about knowing procedures and regulations on top of the first grade tig welding skills. This is the realm of trained aircraft maintenance fitters working for major airlines.

Thanks for the posts guys - i have a job coming up soon and they want to train up a tig welder - which for me is a great opportunity because i have only just enrolled to do a TAFE course here in Adelaide and was going to do it before i got this job offer - just need to pass a MIG welding test cos they still need MIG welding tasks and will get the job.

They are offering $24 /hour which i think is good for now but wonder what TIG qualified welders should expect to get who have more experience - i wont complain at a $24/hour pay rate as a "beginner". Seems like a fantastic opportunity - not sure what other job offers there are in Adelaide for TIG welders but hopefully i can negotiate a few dollars more per hour once i gain more experience and produce top notch TIG welds.

well its through an agency and its casual as far as i know but full time hours and will last a while - may even lead to permanent position if they are willing to train me - find out more this Wednesday

I am in adelaide and doing my 3e cert and the best pay i've found is 25-26 full time. As for tig i know an apprentice 3 yr who just did tig and he was on around that figure 2 yrs ago.

thanks for the comment - i have the welding test tomorrow - the company is rinnai (think its hot water place) - they just gave me details today - so should find out more details later tomorrow

i used to work for a welding mob and got boilermaker apprenticeship out of it - 3 year study at TAFE - so i am confident about MIG welding test but anything can go wrong - haven't done it for abut 5 years since i left the place - place was too dangerous to work for i thought - one guy lost his fingers on an old press and most of the supervisors were stoned during their lunch breaks - you would not believe what sort of people worked there - and these supervisors were the ones that set up the presses for all the apprentices to use........hmmmmmm.

So no OHS?
I would suppose with all the lack of health and safety would no Union also be the case?

OHS - lol - whats that - we had no union there actually come to think of it - only about 12 welders there so not sure why no union for us at the work - at the time never even thought about it.

I did get my cert. 3 - heavy fabrication which i am grateful for - it was a great place to learn because we did fabrication from scratch - and did everything - had time on the cold saws, crane operation, plasma cutting, oxy cutting - loved that.. - robot welder operator, robot driller even - learnt so much but the safety there put me off - and made me think other places would be no better so tried to get out of there as fast as i could. And back then believe it our not, wage was about $9 for adult apprentice per hour and tradesmen were getting like $12 which seemed like crap pay to me - now its almost doubled in 5 years (so has living expenses i guess) so even with minimal welding you can easily get about $22 - $24 per hour which is great.

I though that OHS was a bit of a wank at first then I was sent to an OHS course where that explane how an employer will save money in the long term by incouraging a safe work place. It benefits both employer and employee!
Make sure that your an payed up in the Union its handy if the ???? hits the fan!

how did the welding test go?

I have the same cert as you which in old terms is a boilermakers ticket.

thanks for the interest - welding test was a mix up - they made me weld TIG which i told them i have not really done much of - the agency told me to prepare for a MIG test -

I told the guy i would give it a go anyway and didn't really impress him - or myself - needed much more practice but i was told they would train up someone for TIG welding before i got there - but when i got there, he was expecting someone with more experience in TIG......so i didnt get that job - still going to do a TAFE course in Feb - AS 1796 - 7 Gas tungsten-arc welding - cost $500 but its worth it -

Its also good to note that one agency told me that it is hard to find an unemployed TIG welder these days - meaning it is in real demand at least in SA - so its the way to go to stay employed if you keep moving from job to job
