On the weekend I was at a field day which had a few brand name as well as generic brand welders on display, and having looked closely at a few, I'm pretty damn sure the guts of many of them are virtually identical - the CIG 175i being one of them, and I'd lump the UniMIG 190 inverter combo MIG, Tokentools machine and a few others into the same basket.

The moral is that in the range of "value" brands, you have to go by people's experience with a *specific* model of machine, not the brand in general.
No argument at all to the fact that most manufacturers make dud models, which is why I have said in many posts that any prospective machine should be trialled first.
I still have not found a UNIMIG that I would spend my hard earned on yet - but as I said, many seem happy with theirs.

Well tried mine for the first time yesterday Karl and I have to say - not sure if it's my welder, welding skills - or the fact I was welding gasless but there were balls of splatter everywhere! I have read that some cheap wires can be resonsible for that also.... The wire I used come with the welder.

I thought I did, but now I'm not so sure... If I hadn't would that had made it such a mess?

gassless wire spatters a bit generally but excessively if the polarity isn't correct. Your earth cable should be to positive.

Yeah I think I had them incorrect, I thought they were right the way it arrived but yesterday I had to change it for gas set up and realised that I stuffed up.
I hired a gas bottle from BOC yesterday and did some welding with gas and man..... WOW! how good is it!!!!
I think I need to keep playing with it to get the line feed right as when I start it's like popping a bit but the welds were very acceptable, looked good enough and had good penertration - just need more practise and get the settings right.

    Hi gang,
A couple of questions to add to this thread If I buy the Blue painted steel tubing - do I need to still grind it back to shiny metal before I weld with a gas mig? I'm sure I've seen other post in this forum and it looks like the blue painted metal has just been welded over....

Another question, why is the shelf that the welder sits on leaning back on a majority of welding trollies?

As a personal preference I try and clean up all metal (gal, painted, whatever) before welding - I just reckon it will give me the best results (or at least the best chance at the best result).

The lean back is probably so the controls are more visible and easier to adjust during use.
    Cheers.

    Vernon.

No need to grind it back, same with Duragal. Only need to grind hot dipped gal, powdercoated and topcoat painted steel really.
    Cheers
