    Default Warning on plasma cutters

    Hi everyone,
I saw the following posted on the practical machinist board and thought enough of it to cut and paste here.
It is an example of what you can get buying Chinese welding electrical products. The Chinese have started to to display the CE logo on some machinery and industrial electricals -like plasmas and welders.the original CE Euro logo is a quality assurance label whereas the Chinese one supposedly stands for China Export. The Chinese machine you have, MAY not comply with recognized safety standards.Regard this as a heads up only, not as a starter for an argument, please!

(quote) I posted this to the yahoo welder list but thought to post here as well.

About three months ago, I bought a cheap, Chinese plasma cutter off an ebay seller who dissapeared immediately after the sale. His lack of feedback compelled me to complete the sale in person so I did not loose out my cash. And, the few times I've used the machine, it's worked perfectly.

There was a problem though with the air line fitting on the cutter's housing. The fitting was a flange mount and it was loose on the housing so that the dryer/filter was flopping about. Yesterday, I decided to take the cutter appart so that I could tighten the fitting. When I had the housing cover off, I discovered the problem I'm writing to report to this list. The ground lead (green) from the 220V power cable was connected to the PLASTIC fan motor housing. Again, the metallic housing was NOT grounded. I fixed this and thought to let people know.

If you own one of these, or any other welder/cutter from you know where, please check to see that you have the housing grounded. It's a quick and simple check with a multimeter. All you have to do is check for continuity from the lead's ground to the metallic housing. (End quote)

Thanks Grahame, I'll probably never buy a plasma, but it's good to know what the quality is like coming out of china.

I thought about buying a plasma cutter but was told by my fitter and turner brother that they're not much good because the metal has to be clean for them to be effective. He said that he always avoided using them even when they were available. I trust his judgement so I won't bother with one.

Does anyone here who uses one disagree with this?

I shudder when I see that mark and put whatever it is straight down, should stand for "crap export".I haven't seen anything yet with that logo that I would buy.

We use one where I work for cutting the floors and sides out of stock trailers and crates, they are really rusty amongst other things. We also regularly cut through thick paint without precleaning it. They are the only thing that is fast enough to do the job without chipping off most of the crudd first. The only thing that I can think of that your brother was having trouble if the machine wasn't big enough to do the job, or the earth wasn't good enough, that can sometimes hinder the cutting efficiency.
