    Default Welding gas suppliers

    Greetings all,

I have the heeby jeebies with BOC at the moment and am currently looking at alternate suppliers for my welding gases.

The two alternatives here in Adelaide are Air Liquide or SupaGas. Im wondering if anyone has used either of these companies and has any feedback or information (like fill pricing and container charges)? Unfortunately neither comany lists container charges or fill pricing on their websites.

At this stage Im leaning toward Supagas because they are a smaller Australian company (and they deliver).

    Thanks

I use Air Liquide and have no complaints. I find their prices to be very favourable and in many cases cheaper than Supagas
It depends on your location as to Supagases deliveries, there is a cost to some locations.

    Hi
Do not know how much gas you are using?
I use very little and found the monthly rental a killer.
I found a place up here (Sydney) that sells you the bottle and their is no rent to pay. There then swap the bottle out with a refilled one when you need a refill.

Current cylinder holdings are as follows:

    1 D Argon
2 D ArgoShield Lite (will probably get a G of equiv on change of suppliers)
    1 G Oxy
    1 G Acteylene

    Consumption for the last 12mths:

    8x D Fills ArgoShield Lite
3x D Fills Oxy (changed to G last fill)
3x D Fills Acteylene (changed to G last fill, should have only been 2 but one of the cylinder valves was leaking)
2x D fills Argon, with an anticipated increase in the next 12mths.

At an average of $80 for a D fill, and container charges averaging $120/yr BOC are currently up me for around $1800 per annum. Not a huge spend by anyones stretch and fortunately I can charge most of it out. My main beef is customer service or lack of it.

It will be Speedgas. Some welding suppliers are now agents for them as well.

hey Russell, that is interesting, I like you use very little, an E bottle a year yet pay $195 rent plus $67 per fill. How much did you pay to buy the bottle and how much is the swap once empty?

It been a long time since I have used them. I would be out of date. I did the sums at the time and I come out well in front for my situation.

    From your contact:

The price of an E size cylinder is $285 and the gas is $133. So for the E it would be initially $418 and then you would own the cylinder and only pay for the gas as you need it.

The gas is expensive since I get it for $64 but I pay $190 for "rent" so clearly a better choice.
Renting a cylinder becomes a non issue for someone that uses one refill a week. For me that uses one or two a year, the rent is more than the gas.
By the way to pay 2/3 of the value of an item a year is a tad dear. What is the estimated life of a cylinder? 40 Years?

I went through this exercise a few years back and settled on Supagas.
For a 4.8m3 argon cylinder the quarterly rental I'm paying is $48. I haven't get the invoice for my last refill but in July 2010 it cost me $88 (inc GST). They will do free next day delivery in the Adelaide metro area which I think is a plus.
