Welding, Purchase
Hi Guys,
I am looking at purchasing a Lincoln Powermig 180 for home/workshop use. The unit works on 240V, single phase. Can it be used in a typical household outlet or do you need a sparky to set up a special switch in the workshop. I'd really appreciate some help as I have an excellent deal....$1 000.
Regards

it should have a 15a plug most of your 10a gpos will have 16a to 20a breakers so really if you can get a 15a gpo fitted would be easy if not there are other ways you can do it but will leave that up to others to say

Generally you cant have too much power to feed to a welder.
Lincoln State only 10.7 amps input. However you must factor in how far your workshop is from your powerboard. If it is a long way there can be volt drop which can be overcome with larger wire
What size wire you have and as the supervisor mentioned what sized breakers or fuses you have.
If you have fuses, Circuit breakers can allow the cable to be rated to a higher capacity.
Even Lincoln stating 10.7 amps input may be marketing guff.
get some thing in writing from the dealer or Lincoln

Thanks guys. I have 20A circuit breakers fitted. So, I assume a 15A gpo can be fitted to take the welder. Is this correct?

20 amp breakers sounds Ok
How far is the workshop from the house or more precisely how long is the cable run from the supply switchboard to the workshop outlet?

The garage is attached to house.....about 25 metres (perhaps less). I do have an outlet for a spa pump next to the switchboard (outside) and I have plenty of outlets much closer,,,less than 10 metres but would need to use a small extension cord (3 to 5m)
