    Default 1907 type 10 Stanley 5-1/4. Value?

    Hi guys, I'm after a rough valuation of a plane I found in an antiques shop. It's a Stanley 5-1/4 that I was shown by the owner, it threw me because it said "Bailey" on the toe and the only place I could see Stanley was on the blade. I've done some research and I'm 99% positive it's a type ten made between 1907 and 1909, or a very early 1910. Now, when I saw this I was a little unimpressed originally as it was well and truly filthy and rusty, however there was no pitting, no scaling and nothing broken. All the fasteners still turned but I don't think any japanning has survived, and if anything ever had any nickel plating that's all gone. The blade has been ground as a rather shallow scrub, but at least 80% of the blade is still there, probably 90%. It looks like it was in use right up to WW1 and then stored since then in a mostly dry-ish environment.

    I'm thinking of purchasing it for a restoration project with the idea of using it, not storing or selling it. What I would like is an opinion on what would be a fair offer for it? The seller knows nothing about planes, he will probably throw it at a wire wheel and then stick it on the shelf, but I'd rather it got a bit more TLC. I'll be round there again next Wednesday and I was thinking of offering $20-30 dollars in its current state, am I being too cheap here?

    Sorry, no photos, just the description above to go on. As I said, I'm not after restoring and selling for a profit, I appreciate the quality of the older Stanley's etc and will be restoring it for a user. I bought a 9-1/2 block complete with its original box about 7 years ago, the box is stored out of the way and the plane lives on the bench where it belongs!

    The 5 1/4 was known as the school boy jack.
    Quite common in the US but a rarer plane here in Oz.
    I used to bring them back whenever I found them on my US and Canadian trips.
    From memory about $75 was the going price for a half decent one.
    I have one in my kit and like the size.
    The iron is the same as a No3.
