Default Alfred Herbert Drill or Broach?

Groovers, I have been watching this item on the Bay and went a had a look at it today. Is it a drill or some kind of broaching/ tapping machine?

I have contacted Herbert tooling in the UK but that will take some time for an answer to come. Any information will be great.

    Regards Damien

Damien looks to be a 1920 era drill design with a 1941 build date by the look of the tag. A jig borer of sorts. Yours look a little reworked. Herbert

was one of the largest makers of machines tools in the UK.

We had one of these in the tool room at civeng until recently.
Jim from the mens shed scored it and has it up and running again.
Fantastic bit of kit, I'll post some pics when back in Sydney.

ps I was given a complete head for one of these years ago, never did anything with it and finally sold it on the 'bay for about $40.

Clear out, What type of head did they have? Did they have a table like a normal drill press or vise of some description? I went a had a look and when they removed it from the trailer they dropped it and smashed the speed selector handle and selector plate. Handy people. Damien

    Damien,
It has a very heavy cast table with rise and fall.
The one in your pick looks like a head cobbled onto a home made base.
I should be back in Sydney Saturday and if so will go to the shed and get you some pics.
We used it only a week or so ago and with the power feed it just chews thru steel.
I have a Taiwanese heavy pillar drill with power feed that my mate picked up out of a skip, it works ok but not a patch on the Herbert.

There a jig borer press that let you rise and fall but not foul center. the chuck head rides on ways . Here is my J&S from England that is made the same way.

Thanks Jack, that is a groovy little drill press with substantial weight to it. A bit of attention to the bearings and it will be very quiet. I like the look of the table, without holes in it. Have you had the DP long?

have had the press for a few years now and it got no run out at all.

My other press is a 40s Delta for wood working that i rigged with a VFD so i don't have the change belts.

the move is before i charged out the quill bearing but i have a video of it using router bits to cut slots at high speed.

Very impressive machine!!!!! Is that a power down feed on the side? The size of that table is massive and truely beautiful. Lucky shed group.
Where did you find it? Damien.

Clear out, Do you have any close up pictures of the bearing nearest the chuck? The bearing in mine is open at the bottom and I was wondering if this is normal? Damien.
