alta combination saw/buzzer
It is with interest that I read camo and others commenting on the Alta combination machine. I have one of the early ones I think as it is a single belt. The jointer bed is 1200mm.long and the electrics are not original. I would like to know if the machine has some value.

Hi , We love Pictures , If you can put some up it will help . Yes they have some value , the more we talk about them here the more they go up it seems and they should bring what they are worth . single phase is a bonus and increases the chance of a sale , as does the location of the sale , and then how the machine is presented.
There has been a nice single phase on ebay the last few weeks and the guy wants $1000 , nice machine but he is out of town quite a way and it has not sold .

I have seen single phase ones sell for $3 to $400 which need a good clean up . Motor replacements are not cheap $6 to $700 I think . Matty did one and has seen quite a few of them . some times they have sold around or over $1000 . I forget those ones Matty may know.
I did my time working on one ,and at a later stage I bought one and did it up and sold it for $850 , Hardly worth it for the time I spent on it . They have a spot where a lot of them break because of the wheel placement , that's always interesting to see if its broken or not . most have.
I have a young ex apprentice who is wanting one and may be interested in yours if your thinking of selling , He went out and got one but it didnt have a fence or planner on the side .

Welcome aboard! I've been known to babble on about a lot of things, but I think Matty has shown us most of the Alta combo (he has restored a few now). They are great machines, but as Rob said, value is a hard one to determine (so many factors, and sometimes, like with all things, they will sell for far more than you thought or a lot less than they should).
Would love to see some photos.
cheers,
Camo

I jumped straight in thinking only of monetary value, is that what you meant?
If your asking what they are like as a wood working machine , they are great.
I think they were the best you could buy in that catagory of combination machines out of the locally made gear at the time. But then I dont have vast knowledge on all machinery like some others around here, but I think I'm right on this?
The only thing I didn't like about the one I worked on was that the blade did not tilt to 45 degrees . I got kicked off a few times until I learned how to use a table saw the right way. Ive got a friend who lost two fingers and half a thumb in one mistake on the buzzer on his. I don't think he likes his any more .

Thank you both for answering my question about value of my Alta. I have just sold it for $ 375 which I think is fair enough.I'am practically computer illiterate and it took me some time to work out how to get into thjs site and I still don't really know what I'am doing. As for including pictures ..do not know how. I know I should try and learn...jacob

Good on you for replying Jacob .
Replying to a question to someone who is new and they don't then reply back is one of the most annoying things sometimes. It happens from time to time . If you find a section on this forum that suits your interest then you will only get better at using the computer . We all were the same not so long ago .
