Auger bits - what is a full set
Not sure if this is the correct thread.
But.
What would be considered a "Full set" of brace and bit augers/bits.
1/4" up to 1" in 14" increments?

Hi Lyle,
1/4" up to 1" in 1/16" increments, hence a lot of sets consist of thirteen bits. Most American manufacturers stamped a number which reflected the size in 16ths, ie, 4 being 1/4", 10 = 5/8ths and so on. British makers tended more to mark the whole fraction ie, 1/4 IN, 5/16 IN etc.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Thanks Geoff.
You have just pre-answered my next question regarding the numbers stamped on some I have.
Great reply.
Thanks very much.

Russell Jennings #100 - box of 13 ..
From memory, 1/4" through 1"
Link: Russell Jennings auger bits
Russell Jennings starts his US Patent No.12,318 text with a desciption of what was wrong with the current style of auger bit (usually ascribed to L'Hommedeau):
Each shank is stamped with the size of the hole to be drilled, expressed in 16ths of an inch.
The Linked set is this (yes, I have two sets) ...

Full standard set, as described above. I've got some up to 2", but I lack the shoulders and biceps to turn them.

Mine is 1/4" through 1-1/8" in 1/8" increments.

In practice though I use 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1" and 1-1/8". Rarely have used any of the others.
For a set to be "complete" you would also need the metrics.

Not complete unless you have an "expansion" bit as well

And probably some screwdriver & countersink bits

The BEST auger bits are now made in Japan by Woodowl. There are screw ended versions with triple cutters (rear), as well as screwless versions (front) for the drill press.
