It's perfectly obvious Geoff: it's for Brett Smudge of Smudge Road...

Sorry Brett - not trying to take the mickey. Just protecting your privacy (with a little humour along the way).

    Cheers, Vann.

    Default Fitting Frogs.

    Hi Brett.

Now that the frog has arrived, you'll need to fit it to ensure best performance of your plane.

Place the frog on it's seat on the base casting. it should be supported at the back and on both front "legs". See if it rocks diagonally, because if it does it'll need some work. I start by gently filing the high spots until the rocking is nearly eliminated. Hopefully that won't be necessary and you can go straight to the next step.

Then I "blue" the machined surfaces on the bottom of the frog (I cheat and use a felt marker). I then apply coarse grinding paste to the matching faces and grind the frog backwards and forwards on its seat(s) - you only get about 5mm of stroke which is a PITA. Repeat the process a few times, cleaning and reapplying the "blue". You should notice the area that gets the "blue" abraded, increases painfully slowly.

Switch to a medium grinding paste and repeat. I think you're aiming for 75% of the matching faces ground (but I have stopped with less - intending to maybe complete the job at a later date).

If you're a perfectionist, and have the patience, repeat with fine grinding paste.

The result should be a well seated, rock steady frog.

    Cheers, Vann.
