Hi Cam.

I have a Jeffwood 27" band saw. It is 8' tall and weighs 11cwt which is approx 560kg. Your machine looks similar in size ,maybe a little shorter but i think would be close to the weight of mine.

Thanks for the info Ross I actually had a chance to look at it today (unplanned visit).

Had a bit of a hiccup lets say, someone trying to gazump me (the seller told them it was sold and they tried to pressure the situation trying to go down and pay before me). Each to there own I suppose, but personally if I had heard someone had already bought something, I wouldn't try to break that agreement by offering to pay the seller quicker, others may disagree, but thats just my opinion. Fortunately the seller kept his word, and called me to confirm I was definately interested and agreed to tell the guy to wait. Unusually he had no calls in the last 2 weeks and then got two today.


I decided to pay for it today (I have about 2 weeks to get myself organised in the workshop before I pick it up, which suits me). So the deal is done now! So I guess I can now say SOLD!!

Gave it the once over, thus far things look good. Wanted to get some pictures, but guy was working and it was tucked in the corner.

Got a photo of the name plate, that's about it for now

Cam, I think Ross is pretty close on the weight, here is a 1960 McPhersons catalog cut below, its times like this that I would kill for a L.S.Barker illustrated Catalog !!
Your machine does look like the 27 inch, which I have never see before, But I have seen many 38's.
Glad it fell into your hands Cam, Barker made some beautiful stuff, I believe that was the pinnacle of Australian engineering in the 50's and 60's.
Looking forward to seeing more as it unfolds...

A BIG thank you for your help today (many txt msgs back and forth, and helping me stay focused over the phone about what to look for on site). Once again you come through with another picture of the machine in question with some vital statistics. In my opinion you are a true asset to this sub forum, and I am constantly amazed at the variety of information that you have on such a broad range of machines, in summary you SUCK

Hi all,

Well today was the big day (I cheated a bit and a few days ago I went and took the table, the guide assembly, etc off to reduce weight a bit, and reduce the chance of anything breaking in transit, I wanted to take off the wheels, but was unable. As the machine was up against some shelving).

After some indecision, I decided to transport the band saw (sorry ban saw) standing upright. To try to reduce instability I decided to nail a piece of MDF to a pallet, and added eye bolts to each corner and used a chain halo across the top of the bandsaw and pulled the band saw down to each corner.

The motor is 3hp and being direct drive the motor RPM is only 950

I think I might have another ex-government machine (the guy had a few old machines which he purchased together a few months back (he couldn't shed any light on the history unfortunately), but they all have what looks like asset numbers painted on them, and stickers saying department 810, so I am guessing government?).

Well got it home safely, although I suspect it is heavier than I originally thought, the load didn't move (which is no surprise with all the ratchets backed up by ropes. Looked like a spiders web). It is still on the trailer (I thought I might sleep on the best way of getting it off, it is very close to being too tall to get under the door, with the trailer and the added height of the trailer).

Cam, when you get a chance, I would love to see a better pic of the Blue L.S.barker badge with north Melb on it.
I have some L.S.barker machines with a Waterdale Rd address, I know its a long shot, but I'm trying to get my head around when barker moved from North Melbourne to West Heidelberg, or if at all they did, I have seen some very unususl barker machines lateley.
I may have to kick of a new post I think and have some speculation.....

Glad you got it home cam, can't wait to see more !!

Hi Matty, it is still on the trailer covered, so I suspect you are just trying to get some revenge for the last time I asked you for a photo.


Below is one taken on the phone camera (hopefully the quality is good enough the serial number is 5047), I also took a photo of the starter plate in case that helps with dating. I am curious about the date of this machine (obviously you said the Mcphersons catalogue was 1960's, but any ideas on when this model may have started and finished).


I think it would be great if you start a new post, I wouldn't mind trying to do some research myself, so I for one would love to see anything you have on the subject.

Sorry to say guys, but please be patient with me, I still have some work to do on the tablesaw yet, so it might be a bit before I really get to do much with this bandsaw.

Hi Camo
Congratulations on your new old toy. When I had to offload a heavy table saw and jointer into my shed many years ago, we backed the trailer into the shed, and "tommed up" and temporarily reinforced the ceiling joists and used a block and tackle to lift them a few inches, then drove the trailer away.
You might consider deflating the trailer tyres to gain a few inches of clearance. (hope you have a compressor to re-inflate).
