thicknesser
Just on the Barker theme ...
I notice this in the For Sale section:
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f221/t...-lathe-142977/
I'm not sure what the rear section to that motor is?
And whether the dust extractor would be powered by a separate motor - or somehow run off the thicknesser motor also.

Mmmm, I want it...
Im looking for the two stage pulley set up on that electric motor, Can't see in that photo, that motor could be set to drive the cutter-head and the feed, the feed is flat belt run with fast and loose pulleys looking closely.
The blower would run a separate motor I think.
Looks like there are some missing bits, none the less an excellent project for someone who wanted a good solid thicknesser.
If I bring home one more Thicknesser I am a Dead man !

grays online
I have never been to this site ... but I landed there 5 min before the end of an auction ...
Joinery & Benchtop Manufacturing Equipment - NSW Pick Up
Sale no: 5001693
Sale type Online Pickup
Start time 16/11/2011 4.30 PM AEDT
End time Going going… What is this?
Deliver to Pickup Only NSW
Sale location
24 Fairfield Street, Villawood, NSW, 2163
There was a 'mcpherson' bandsaw - sold $184 and
Lampard chain morticer $409.
I think these are really ended but it seems they have an extend the auction policy of +10 minutes after every successful bid past the 'close' time. I like that idea.
I harvested the pictures.
Cheers,
Paul McGee

on the lookout
This is a great post full of very useful information, I'm on the lookout for a decent sized bandsaw now and will defintely be looking for something with a decent cast iron frame. I was looking at a new 19" bandsaw and the top wheel just sits on the edge of the 1mm sheet. Looks like it has heaps of room to flex.
Any pointers on where to find a machine similar to these ones?
Cheers

The entry for that Thornley says made in Australia ... do you have more info about that brand Matty?
Simon - maybe other people have had a different experience - but I don't think I've ever seen prices from resellers as cheap as the opportunistic bargain that you find ... wherever else. I think that when you have an interest and pre-arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can, read up about the parts that might be missing or vital to operation ... or even easily replaced by a knowledgeable party, plus a bit of luck and willingness to plunge in - then when an opportunity presents itself you have a basis for making a decision quickly to buy, or to leave it.
Have a great christmas/new year everyone.

I really like the look of that Thornley but am cautious about it mostly because it's in Sydney and i am in Adelaide. I can't imagine I would have an easy time trying to find someone to backload it for less than a few hundred dollars. I'll be watching a few of the local websites for one though.
If matty does have any info on the Thornely brand I'd be interested to see it though.
How would they have made the frames for these bandsaws, would they be cast Iron, or something else?
Cheers All

Gaza, I think Simon was referring to this Thornley that Matty linked to.
Simon, I forget now where that first one is selling, but I'm sure as damn it is essentially the same 36" LS Barker that I have ... and I think Matty has the same also - not sure what year his is.
Cheers,

Not a lot.....
Paul and Simon, I've got nothing on Thornley at all, all I have ever seen is a 12 inch planer many years ago cast iron and very solid.
W. Thornley & Sons, were as far as I know located 23 Unwin s Bridge Road St Peters NSW, There's not a great deal on the Net about them.
Simon that L.S.Barker Bandsaw on the "Machines for U" site is a 1960 Model
very nice machine fabricated with solid wheels.
But Paul is right, the First one that I posted from E Bay is a early L.S.Barker(It is not clear because of the guarding) the same that Paul and My self have and own, mid to late 1940's.
Simon many of the Cast iron C frames on older Bandsaw's were Core casting and hollow in the middle, none the less very very strong and vary in thickness from 12 mm to 20 mm in some places and edges, the Bases were usually thickened right up for even more strength.
I don't think you could go wrong if you were to purchase one of these older Bandsaws, the large wheels can be re rubberized the fan Belts and bearings can be serviced\Replaced and electric motors changed or re wired, once this is done, if it needs doing, you basically have a machine that will last a life time !

Interesting ... that on the website for that 60s bandsaw it says cutting height 450mm and blade length 6.3m.
My blade length is 5.55m, and cut height max at 375mm ... could maybe push to 400mm with a different guide setup.

Also ... on my bandsaw and on this ebay one (fifth photo - rear shot) (Matty's too I guess) there is a cut-out through the frame casting. Do you know what it is there for?
Is it anything to do with those weighted levers on the old Fay bandsaws and etc?
Puzzled.

Casting Core Openings
Paul those little openings do two things, they help support the core with in the "cope and drag" set up before metal is poured and are also there to provide an opening to knock out the casting core after the C section has being poured and cast, you could get in there after with a bit of wire or something and poke the sand based material out, it breaks away and crumbles easily because it looses its body or strength after the hot metal pour.
Merry Christmas Everyone, hope you have a good one !
