    Hi Spin Doctor

to my eyes those Bergs are
    1. not a matched set -- look at the differences in the handle detail
    2. not pristine -- look at the condition of the "shark" decals you can see
    3. and the blades are wrapped in plastic so their condition is not visible
    regards from Alberta, Canada

    Seems a bit rich.
I'd be happy to sell my larger set of 11 working Bergs, 1/8" to 2", for less than that (they are used tho )

    Default interesting..

...when I started woodworking, bergs were described as if they were the holy grail. Then, I got a set. They're decent chisels.

A lot of things are. I think the later sheffield footprint bench chisels are probably better, but also hard to get in handles that aren't boat anchors, and I sold mine on later. Both of those.

Read this earlier and went out to scout the UK tool selling sites just to see if they had any primo older try planes that have something about them that I don't yet have and at the front of the page was three pretty nice tanged berg chisels for 60 quid.

From a dealer. I guess for you guys, that would be about 40 australian per plus shipping.

The bergs represent an era of chisel-dom - the transition to entirely machine made stuff - they're kind of in transition from the earlier finer hand ground chisels to the later stuff with tiny bevels and really tall sides. Is the fact that they were a quality new good (but not the equal of something like late 1800s sheffield cabinetmaker's chisels) when most had departed quality the thing that made them so highly regarded?
