A couple of lockdown projects for a mate.
I have a few years worth of car/bike and machinery plus furniture projects on the go so I passed a couple of bitza planes onto a good mate who’s on his own in lockdown in his house and unable to access his workshop.
Both I scored on impulse at one of my or one of the later TTTG tool sales here in Sydney.
First a nice red painted Bedrock 605. No irons or lever cap or ear tote. Paid Eddy $30.
The second a Seldon Bailey Defiance #5 sized plane with no iron or lever cap, I swapped an unidentified cast iron whatsit for this.
My mate Peter has the 605 up and running after cannibalising a spare 4.
The Defiance has kept him a little more occupied.
Firstly researching what it was (I’d stupidly moved on my copy of PTAMPIA Vol 11 when I sold off my Stanley collection).
Thankfully there’s quite a bit of info out there on the net on these and a few on US eBay also.
Peter has bodged up an iron and back iron and carved a wooden cap to figure out how it works.
I’ve dug up a chunk of brass from the stash so it’ll be interesting to see that made into a more useable cap.
I’ve a #97 that is missing same so need to knock one up for it myself.

Brass cap iron on the other Bailey’s plane.
Cycled over for a coffee in the park and Peter had the Seldon Bailey /Defiance smoother up and planing.
Heres a few photos of the cap he carved out of brass.
He used a trimmer and jewellers tools.
He’s not really satisfied with the lettering so we may cast one later when covid permits.
It feels really nice to the hand, rear tote suits my size perfectly.
Its a bit shorter than a Stanley/ Leonard Bailey No5.
