Damned Pickers.
Damned pickers .
This post drill sold last night here in NZ for a wopping $540 NZD. That's at least twice what I thought it was worth (going on previous sales here). The seller fancies himself a a 'Picker' (as in the TV show) and his Trademe name is 'vintage picker'. I must say he presents his wares well.

VINTAGE BLACKSMITHS DRILL PRESS | Trade Me
It's a "Burnham" blacksmiths post drill, made either by Geo. Burnham Co. or the company that bought him out Francis Reed Co. It's missing the crank handle and self-feed lever - which is what makes these old post drills fun - to turn the handle a watch the feed lever and pawl clicking away.
Trouble with pickers is they drive up prices, without adding value. They take tools out of a price range that bottom feeders like me can afford . Same goes for the steampunk craze.
Moan over.

Wow, he had a few alright! It's difficult to see enough detail to be sure, but it looks like there are a few beauties in there.
I'm pleased to say I didn't get that far down the slope before changing interests (to Wadkins). I've got five post drills on one wall at home, and one in my workshop proper. There are three more I could mount - and one is definitely going up (when the wife isn't looking ).
Then there are the left-over parts (often it takes two to get the parts to complete one). I believe I've bought 17, and on-sold 3 - to get 9 reasonably complete post drills. And that's not counting some (4?) hand cranked bench drills .
