Default DawnPost Drill - Dating Versions

Been doing some research on what little I can find on Dawn Post Drills and there seems to be some variations to the 611 Models made from 1920-1950. There was a post model & a bench model.

    Screen shot 2013-06-13 at 7.21.26 PM.jpg

On mine the is an embossed letter A on the sliding part of the screw feed. I haven't seen this on any others and it doesn't have the lubrication holes.

Another point of difference is in the cams. There is a solid cam with a single handle slot and a huge flathead screw/bolt fixing, or a extending spiral cam with a T- handle slot allowing for the removal of a split pin fixing.

As far as I can tell they only came with the square table, but I have seen one with a round table but I think this was appropriated of a different brand post drill maybe a Globe.

Love to know how to date the different variations. If anyone has any information on Dawn Post drills I'd love to see it.

I have some information on Dawn post drills that was written by a guy in Perth. It's more about variations than actual dates. It could probably do with some editting, and I'd have to ask the guy's permission before posting it.

Or PM me with your e-mail address.

    Cheers, Vann.

    PM sent.

Any info at this stage is good. Thanks for your assistance.

Another differance I have noted is mine has a small ball at the end of the handle on the ratchet feed wheel.

    Hi DSEL74,

I have given your details to my friend who will probably contact you.
This is probably the same person Vann is referring to.

    Regards,
    Geoff.

Yes, Allen is a mine of information on Aussie made blacksmith's drills (and one or two others).

The handle on the feed wheel is cast as part of the wheel (at least on mine, and every picture I've seen), so I'm not sure if you have a user mod there.

Another possible user mod on yours is the "pawl" on the feed arm (made of a chunk of steel plate?). Most have a cast shape with a ball at one end and a "tooth" at the other.

The handle and wheel are cast as one, like yours but shorter and has a cast ball on the end.

The "pawl" on mine is a replacement I guess the original broke or was lost. (I just learn't what is is called from your post)

    .

I have found out there was a belt driven version labelled the 611A. Since it probably used the same main casting I wonder if the A was designated on another prominent position rather than make a separate patten and cast a different version of the body with the 611A on it.

This may be where the A on my feed screw nut sleeve on the spindle. Now this bears the question of if the sleeve came from a 611A or my drill has been converted from a belt drive to a flywheel?

The cam with solid edge indicates it is an earlier model, although it does have bearings. So I am not sure which predates the other or if there was a cross over period.

The cog on mine has a bot in the centre which could indicate it was an industrial version which was green and had a bolt on handle instead of the push through type? Mine is a dark color and has no signs of ever being red. Of course this could have been stripped or come off over time due to rust.

More I find out the more questions rather than answers I end up with???????

Vann, I have one of these drills, and would be very interested to see that information, if it can be arranged. I will PM you with my email as well.

Dawn small.jpg As you can see in this old image the early Dawns 611 did have a ball on the end of the feed screw wheel. So that makes that part on mine original, one mystery solved.

Have a few photos here. Unfortunately, the drill is shown lying on the floor. I have a 6 x 6 metre garage/workshop, and cannot find enough wall space to mount it properly. That is a problem I have yet to solve.

Thanks Mike. When you remove the handle what is holding the cam gear on to the shaft?? Bolt or split pin?

Mine has a split pin, but my newly acquired Canadain Blower & Forge No.61 has the large slotted bolt

    CB&F_1dms.jpg

I believe this has a LH thread ('though I haven't unscrewed mine).

My Dawn 611 also has a different cam to Mike's (mspil)

    Dawn 611a MikeSpil.jpg

Whereas the cam on Mike's is a full and solid "eccentric" (photo), on mine it's not a full circle and not solid, but rather a "tail".

    Dawn 611 2c.jpg

Like this one (photo not of mine).

    Cheers, Vann.

Vann, Can you tell me what is behind the thread and confirm which way it turns (LH or RH thread) As Mine is stuck but I don't want to force it in the wrong direction. I think the Dawn was the more boring design of the post drills. The canadian blower you got is similar but the body is nicer. I think silvers had a really nice design.

The earlier models had the solid cam and later ones the spiral tail. Still trying to determine what year this changed.
