I actually had a chance to go and have a look at this one, and have been in 2 minds about it since, and spent a bit of time texting back and forth with Matty about it.
For the benefit of others who might be interested these were my concerns:
* the condition of the babbit bearings - the saw has the original poured Babbitt bearings, so could be a bit of a project to fix, if they need to be. Unfortunately I wasn't able to run it to look out for wobble or noise (it was hard wired, but they had disconnected it because they were building a partition wall). I thought the next best option would be to give them a good spin, but the blade was on and under tension, I couldn't get it to free spin, it felt like it was the blade rubbing as apposed to an issue with the wheel. I couldn't get the tension to free up (again I don't think there was an issue with it other than being left tightened, which also made me worry a bit about the spring). I tried checking the wheel for lateral movement, I couldn't feel any, but again with the blade on and under tension I figured any wear would be pulled in anyway by the tension of the blade.
* The pulley on the bottom wheel - from the photo it looked like it had been properly converted to run off the motor with a 3 belt pulley, but looking at it in person, the pulley on the bottom wheel is timber and does not look to be original or professionally built,, but also does not have groves for the v belts, and simply has been run under tension against the flat pulley, and the motor was bolted to the floor separate to the bandsaw. My other concern with this setup, was if the pulleys were the right size for the motor speed to give the correct blade speed.
* lastly and probably the biggest concern, was that they didn't have a forklift, and couldn't confirm for me that they could use the neighbours forklift to load it (its far too big to manhandle). I have an engine hoist I could probably take down to load it, so that could be an option.
I am never afraid to save something that needs a bit of work, and to be honest I would like to have a go at repouring Babbitt bearings (I know I am crazy), but I have also reminded myself, that unfortunately there is an increasing number of factories closing, but it does provide us with more opportunities to be a bit more choosy.
I think the common sense side of my is hoping that it gets some good interest, so I can comfortably walk away from it, without the usual "did I make the right decision"
Cheers,
Camo

Matty
During my search for T&R Lees info (re Lees spindle moulder), I found reference to an engineer/designer that moved from T&R Lees to Haigh's...both makers being located in Oldham.
From what I've seen, the Haigh's is certainly a better class of machinery...so I'm curious if you have any Haigh's catalogue cuts resembling my Lees' moulder.

Last of its Kind! Band Saw circa steam power
Last of its Kind! Band Saw circa steam power
$4,000.00 Negotiable
Maryborough VIC 3465
Still runs true and smooth.
Originaly designed to be powered by a steam engine in a factory setting. Where more than one machine would be powered by a shaft that was turned by steam power and every individual machine would be belt driven.
Some where in the mid fifties this machine was converted to 3 phase power.
I am led to beleive that my Father puchased this machine during his time at the Gippsland folk museum. He went on to use for many years including the eleven years at Soverign Hill. This machine was used for much of the timbers to produce thier horse drawn carriages. Please note the saftey guard's where added as a request from worksafe in the eighties.
Since my Father retired it has had little use, and for the last six yeasr has not been used at all. No 3 phase pwr here.
This may just be the last of its kind!
I 'm the selling onbehalf of the estate.
Please do not ask for the lowest price. All decent offers will be taken to the 3 adult children, when they agree on your offer you get the item for sale.

It does need to have the blades sharpened and there are a spare set of blades.
