"If you do things with stuff then you need one of these. I would have found it difficult to get through the last twenty years without one. It has everything one requires in this type of item; dull grey paint of the type used by Deckell or Alexandra. A hand wheel which rotates in a manner made popular by round things with a central hub. A cunning little lever which makes something happen at a distance. A plate which kicks attractively to one side by about 4 deg (Celcius or Richter, which ever you prefer) when said wheel reaches a certain point in its rotation.Two (Count 'em, 2) alignment pegs to ensure that the thing you use it for is correctly placed for when the action to occurs.

Oh the disappointment, I saw that my friend pmcgee had entered the fray so knew that he had, of course, trawled the internet and found the true purpose of the tool, its origins, inventor and at least three archived interviews with ancient tradies who had actually used the blasted thing.
Now come on Paul, abandon all other pursuits for the time being and concentrate.......

Well. Where do I start?
As you all know after an illustrious career as a space cadet I am semi institutionalised due to reality lapses and my carers (Nurse and the Restrainer brothers) like to keep me under chemical and physical wraps so to speak. However in my increasingly diminishing moments of lucidity I caught a glimpse of the "thing". Hah! I exclaimed. I know what that is. That my fellow Forumites is a piece of soviet era space junk. Some sputnik has spat it out and it has come to earth in our sunburned, girted, sweeping plains.
More specifically I know what it is used for. I'm not as familiar with the Crylic alphabet as I was but the Russian word for it is Rotcapmoctihs (I could have spelled that backwards though!) The device is a vital component of any space vehicle and no self respecting cosmonaut (or astronaut for that matter) would go into space without it. Well, despite all the pretty words expended about it, that's what it is used for.

PS. The paper roll hold is missing. Must have burned up re entering the atmosphere

It's clearly a Rotary Hone for an Eccentric Whatchamacallit.
