Default The Great Saw Giveaway Restoration Thread

I have finally received all the goodies I bought to perform the whole task. So far as I have finished restoring 37.

    Before:

    37-1.jpg

    After:

    37-3.jpg

Now sharpened and cutting straight. I elected to not reset the teeth as they looked as they had enough set and I can confirm they did not need it after ripping a pine 4 x 2.

The missing bits in the handle were replaced with bits of cherry that were laying around on the bench glued in place with hide glue. I'm pretty sure the original parts of the handle are Beech and I don't have any of that. I wasn't sure if I was going to just make a new handle so I elected to patch it with what I have. Finish on the handle is BLO and wax.

I wanted to cut new teeth on 110:

    110-1.jpg

It's a bit hard to see, but there are a number of messed up teeth. I had two goes with a file and paper template to mark the new teeth gullets but they both rubbish. The file would skip and cut somewhere unexpected. No doubt it was operator error. Then I had another thought.

Instead of using a file, I used a super fine cutoff blade in a Dremel to mark the gullets through the template. You can just see the Dremel handpiece in the lower left of the photo.

    110-2.jpg

    Here is the resulting marks:

    110-3.jpg

Here are a sample of the cut teeth:

    110-4.jpg

They're not perfect by any means but getting consistent starting marks made a big difference.

    Is just me,
But not all pics are loading up, so it’s hard to comment,
But I’m glad too see some saws being restored.

    Cheers Matt

I am not Mark, but I have one of those devices. Here is a video that explains what it does.

Mark might want to add further details of how he uses it.

    Latest restoration was No 17.

    As found

    No17.jpg

    And restored and sharpened.

The missing bits on the handle were replaced with bits of Tasmanian Oak that were sitting around. The top of the handle is to replace a mess I made! The top horn was MIA. The handle and saw were very dirty. I've even managed to raise some of the etch on the blade.

I have sharpened this as cross cut. I wanted a slightly more aggressive cross cut saw. It cuts well but I think I will make the rake steeper the next time I touch it up.

I've been pottering away on the rest of my acquisitions. Here's another one I did:

You can see in the middle photo above some products I bought from Timbecon.

The Shield Technology Restore Rust Remover is not something I would buy again, and there is a good chance I may not even bother to use the rest of it. As far as I can tell, it is completely inert. Pretty good as an abrasive lubricant on metal, but otherwise useless.

The Shield Technology ProtecTool Wax is okay. But there are other choices around that are somewhat less than circa $200/Kg.

    Thanks for posting that Mark.

You are starting to give me the itch to restore something as I have not done that for a while: Seems like about seven years.

It may be the wrong itch...

I will have to dig around and see if I can find anything (saws ) and then the time to devote to it.

Having a bit of a cleanse in my creative zone,
Trying to regain some realestate on the shelf’s.

There is still approximately 20 saws left I [emoji848].

Would really really not wanting to tip these, there are still a few that would be perfect work horses with a sharpening and a clean.

Some others would be great cut down for small gent saws, veneer saws extra.

Pick up Glen Waverley Melbourne,or posted at your expense.
Or if someone wants them for a men’s shed or similar, and are Melbourne based I could deliver if not too far out.

    Cheers Matt.

I think I will be right for now thanks Matt.

I'm having a few "real estate shortage issues" of my own. However I have already bought the plywood to make the custom shelving to fit under the metal lathe and milling machine and then I should be alright.
