Hammer/Axe/Nail Puller/Wrecking Bar Tool
I collect old woodworking & some other tools. I have recently obtained the "multi purpose" tool shown in attached file.
Can anyone tell me what the tool is and where I can find out more about it?
It has the following stamped on it -
Diamond Brand
Made in ??NA
where ?? are 2 unclear characters
Also there is a stamped representation of a diamaond.
Any information would be appreciated.

I've seen these listed as 'packing crate hammer' or similar.
A finished ebay listing ...

Diamond brand, made in China. Letters unclear because it's made in China.

They are listed as an "combination tool" in the case opening section of the Marple's 1938 catalogue. Not found them any earlier yet!
Graeme
PS. Bahco also made them (W Aust.. cat... 1940) My guess sofar, is that the design has been around 80+years.Last edited by anglesmith; 15th February 2012 at 03:12 PM. Reason: extra info

I've seen modern-made castings of these in recent times, painted black gloss. I looked at them and wondered just how the hell they could be good for anything. Nothing was machined; not the hammer face, not the cutting edge not the nail puller, not nuthin'. Feel angry when I see this sort of thing. Even if yours was the genuine article, would it still be any good?

Just found them listed in Baker Hamilton cat.. of 1925. They say that they are all steel (drop forged?) back in the day when every thing came in wooden cases I think they would have been useful. But today ? Some one told me once at a swapmeet that they were an German WW2 aircraft escape tool!!!
Think they well and truly predate that.

Last time I saw one of those was at the Rocklea markets in Brisbane when I was a kid. From memory almost every vendor had one for opening fruit boxes or boxing up stuff that had been bought.
