    Default Herbert Home Workshop

Hello. Just bought this old unit which is yet to be picked up. Feel i did alright price wise & to all intents & purposes seems to be complete minus the bed which is neither here or there as that`s just a plank of timber to fit to the legs. Has any one in recent times used one of these pieces of equipment & should i be looking out for any quirky things? Thanks

    Hi Oldgrain,

I found 2 threads that might be of some help with determining if you have all the parts (assuming they are the same machines).

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/herbert-model-c-88984/

    Old Lathe/ Combo. Pics.

Thought it might help, would love to see photos, when you get it.

    Cheers,

    Camo

Hi & thanks Camoz. At present i have only these two sellers pics whereupon looking at the previous info you supplied me there`s obviously a few more pieces to add.But that`s ok for now.

    Cheers

Looks like you got most of the original parts, which is the biggest hurdle when getting older machines.

I also found this (as your new to the forum I thought I would just make sure you know that you can make the image below larger by double clicking it):

I have never been good at spot the difference, this is from a 1954 advert so I can't be sure if there were other models.

    cheers,

Hi Camoz.Thanks. Yep,saw that pic somewhere & u/l it to my home pics files with a couple of others. I personally can`t see having any problem with this unit once i strip/clean/repaint & fine tune it.I actually prefer older pieces as they`ve stood the test of time. I have an old bench saw (1200 sq bed/15" blade) made some 50 years ago by my old neighbour which i`ve refurbed & works well for sheet cutting.Amongst other pieces,i have a KBC jigsaw,KBC drill kit & a DeWalt RAS which was once owned by O`Brien Glass indicated by a stamped brass plate. This is yet to have a stand made for it. Need a bigger shed! cheers

So got the beast home & over the last couple of days have sorted the framework out by welding a couple of irons along the base, added a couple of shelves & secured a mounting platform in place. All material c/o an old double bed frame. The actual piece is only mocked-up to show what it`s all about. The motor has yet to be attached:

    This has a 14" throat:

The chuck shown here is a 1/2" Rohm:

You can see the other pieces that came with this unit & i see no reason why any of the accessories
aren`t capable of being used albeit the thicknesser which seems to be missing some part atop the tube/spring.Not something i`m worried about at this stage. Now the task of stripping down (not me!) cleaning/painting & re-assembling.

We were given one at the mens shed and we immediately gave it away as is was deemed too dangerous for a mens shed.
Even in good working order they are not very practical so I'd put these machines in the carton or couple of bottles of wine category.
