    Default Does anybody have any information on this old Abbey combination machine?

    Hello everybody!

    I recently picked up this "Abbey all purpose woodworker" via evil bay and I'm just wondering if anybody has any information on it?
    Mechanically it's in great shape, everything works well, right down to the bearings. It's powered by a 3/4 hp GMF Cadet motor which was made in Sydney. It has a sanding disc table at one end (currently sans sanding disc) and a chuck for dowelling at the other. The tables are all cast aluminium and the base is sheet steel.
    The only info the internet seems to have is a couple of newspaper ads that date back to roughly 1956.
    Scale wise it's the perfect size for my limited space and it seems to cut very well.
    My plan is to give it a teardown, clean and inspect all moving parts and give it a new coat of hammer tone.
    Any information would be much appreciated. I will post some more pics after I've given it a birthday.

    The newspaper ads you found, did they reference a supplier?? Someone might have the relevant catalogue.

    What were you cutting? as 3/4HP seems to be very light on for something like that.
    Anyway, a motor upgrade looks like it would be pretty easy to perform.
    I'd be considering a 2HP for that sort of machine.

    Also, make sure the tables are well protected from corrosion. Aluminium oxide will leave nasty skid marks on your work.

    Cheers folks,

    I'm using it primarily for cutting small stock laminated timbers for the purposes of solid body guitar necks/bodies.
    (I'll also use it for ply sheet etc)abbey saw.jpgphoto-2.jpgphoto 1.jpgphoto 2.jpg

    I'd love to dyno the motor as I have a 1hp chinese drill press motor that has nowhere near the same torque as the old cadet!
    I haven't put the jointer through its paces yet however if I require a beefier motor it does look very straight forward to install a 2hp unit.

    What would you suggest for a good corrosion inhibiter for the alloy tables?

    P.S. Here are some progress shots and the 1956 Argus ad.
