Reinventing the wheel?
Re someone coming up with the same design many years later, I have a book on early US metalworking patents and they have an adjustable try square listed.
A local toolmaker here in Oz reinvented that recently and sold quite a few.
I'm certain he never knew about the earlier one, the way both were done is the obvious way to achieve the result.
