Odd Marple chisel
I inherited lot of old woodworking gear from my grandfather, whose active working years were from about 1910 through to the 1950s I'm guessing. This chisel by Marples has me perplexed, as it is cut from both sides, so not a standard form, but clearly had some purpose.Chisel-a.jpg

Perhaps repurposed for woodturning.

As far as I can see it looks like it has a micro bevel added to the back of the blade for some reason. Does the other side look like a normal bevel edge chisel? What do you mean by 'cut from both sides"?

Sorry I should have made that clearer. Instead of the usual chisel shape of flat one side, and a bevel the other, this one has a 45 degree bevel from both sides, very peculiar, but it must have been made with some specific purpose in mind. The only thing I can think of is to split something, but that's a lot of trouble to go to for something that hardly needs a lot of accuracy.\
The bevel I should add is equal both sides.

Looks like a “sash pocket” chisel.

A sash pocket chisel? I'd never heard of one, so googled it upon your answer, and bingo, you're dead right!
Interesting that a chisel with a 45 degree bevel and that wide can be hammered deep into a piece of wood and cut straight into half the wood's depth without shattering all the wood grain. Must give it go now.
Many thanks for identifying it!

How thick is it? A sash pocket chisel should have a fairly thin (but wide) blade, which means it shouldn’t split the wood.

Here is the now identified sash pocket chisel, and yes it is quite thin, but not as thin as I'd think to be able to bash straight through a board
