Plane ID help
Hi All,
I have a wood block plane and I am trying to find more out about it, but unfortunately I have not had much luck. I am trying here in hope that someone may know something about it or the manufacturer.
The iron is made by E.C.E, but I have contacted E.C. Emmerich and they said the iron is theirs but the plane body is not.
It has a metal plate fitted to the face of the plane (see photo).
On the right side of the plane there are letters (JL or JE) carved into the top right corner (see photo) to me it doesn't look like it would be the owners initials originally.
On the left side it has like two leaves carved into the left top corner (see photo).
I can't see any other markings without stripping it back, which I really don't want to do.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I can't help a lot other than say that the carved initials and that bow thingie should likely be owners marks. Makers marks are usually stamped on the toe. Its a pretty standard German style horned plane but I cant say if the steel sole is original or a later mod by the owner. The wedge looks like a home fix and may be the cause of the cracked side. The blade will be good if you feel like having a go at plane making.

Thank you for the reply and info John, I appreciate that.
So it could well be a home made plane to begin with I suppose.

It may be and well done if it was but I think the plane body likely was production made. The steel sole may have been a later modification. That bit looks to be well done however. It could be original even. I have just never seen one with a metal sole. Those planes remained popular in Europe as there was a preference for wood planes long after metal planes came along. Still a few wood planes being made in Europe. The wedge is a poorly made replacement and the blade as we know is a replacement. It is quite common to find old planes with borrowed parts and when looking to buy if the name on the body and blade match up it should have more value.
Regards
John

ECE still make planes that shape. It has an ECE blade so there is a good chance it is also an ECE plane .. or started as an ECE plane.
It does have a user made look about it. Where from scratch or upgraded.
